물밀 듯 쏟아지는 성형외과 광고를 접하다보면 이 많은 성형외과가 과연 경쟁력이 있는지, 시장이 포화상태가 아닌지 우려가 된다. 하지만 알고 보면 성형외과 수는 증가하지만 성형외과 전문의는 그리 많지가 않다. 외과, 흉부외과, 산부인과 등을 전공하고도 급여체계나 의료수가가 맞지 않아 어쩔 수 없이 성형외과를 다시 공부해 병원을 개원하는 경우도 많다. 안타까운 일이다. 자신의 분야에서 충분히 의료기술을 발휘할 수 있음에도 여러 가지 환경의 문제로 적성에 맞지 않는 분야로 전과해야 한다는 사실은 제도적으로 해결해야 할 문제이다.
허 원장 또한 이것이 개원의만의 문제는 아니라고 강조했다. 그는 “요즘 의사가 넘쳐나는 세상이긴 하지만 사실 의대 공부가 그리 녹록한 것은 아니다. 평생 환자의 건강을 위해 공부해 온 의사들에게 정당한 대가가 있어야 하는 것은 당연한 일이다. 금전적인 문제로 전공의 방향을 전환해야 하는 의사들은 오죽하겠는가. 제도권 내에서 풀어야 할 과제인 듯하다”라고 말했다.
거제에 이어 서울 개원 예정, 외국인 환자 유치에도 앞장서
이처럼 양심적인 진료와 환자에 대한 애정으로 병원을 이끌고 있는 허 원장은 내년 3월 경 처음 계획한 대로 서울에 성형외과를 개원예정이다, 물론 그 전에 거제 압구정클로버성형외과를 안정화시키는 것이 더욱 중요하다고 말했다.
그는 “거제는 내게 희망과 믿음을 준 곳이다. 이곳 지역민들을 위해 지속적인 진료를 하는 것은 당연한 일이다. 나를 믿고 병원을 찾는 환자들이 있는 한 진료는 계속될 것이고, 서울에 개원을 해도 나와 다른 전문의들이 오가며 진료를 할 계획이다. 내게 거제병원의 의미는 이윤보다 가가치를 앞세운 병원이기 때문이다”라며 “2013년이 새로운 시작이었다면 내년은 또 다른 의미의 시작이 될 것이다. 일단 거제병원을 정착시킨 후 서울에 집중할 계획이며, 외국인 환자를 위한 프로그램도 정착시킬 것이다. 홍콩, 중국, 말레이시아, 일본 등의 환자들을 유치하고 이들이 편하게 수술 받고 이후 진료를 받을 수 있도록 각종 시설 및 프로그램을 만들어 갈 계획이다”라고 말했다. 이러한 해외환자의 유치는 병원의 이윤은 물론 국가전체의 경제와 관광 활성화에도 큰 몫을 차지할 것으로 보인다.

I will do look after them as long as there are patients who come here to me and I will also visit the Seoul clinic where other specialists are there. To me, Geoje clinic is beyond making the profit.”
“If 2013 was the beginning of new start, nest year will be another start in another meaning. First of all, after settling down Geoje hospital, I will focus on Seoul clinic for a while and also, I will establish a program for foreign patients later. This is a plan for patients from Hong-Kong, China, Malaysia and Japan to feel comfortable to take the surgery and treatment after the operation.”
