인생 제 2의 챔피언을 꿈꾼다

통계청이 4일 발표한 ‘2013년 사회조사 결과’에 따르면 우리나라 국민 10명 중 5명이 자신의 사회·경제적 지위를 ‘하류층’이라고 생각한 것으로 나타났다. 이는 역대 가장 높은 비율이다. 특히 하류층에서 다른 계층으로의 이동이 가능하다는 비율은 28.8%로 가장 낮게 집계되었으며 자녀의 사회적 지위가 자신보다 높아질 것이라는 부모의 기대도 41.7%로에서 39.9%로 현격히 줄어든 양상을 보였다. ‘개천에서 용 난다’던 시대가 끝났다고 말하는 차가운 사회적 분위기. 여기 평범한 대학생에서 억대 연봉의 금융가로 성공했고, 이제 더 큰 비상을 꿈꾸고 있는 사람의 소식이 12월의 훈풍이 되어 불고 있다. 한국씨티은행의 이성민 팀장을 만나봤다.

2014년, GMK(글로벌메디컬코리아)를 설립.

한국씨티은행 입사 1년 만에 팀 1등과 전체 2등, 입사 2년 만에 의사·약사 등 VIP 고객들을 상대로 하는 메디컬팀 전체 1등과 신용대출 55억 원 계약 체결, 입사 3년 만에 메디컬팀 책임팀장 임명과 그 해 매출 TOP 기록. 이 괄목할만한 성과는 드라마 주인공의 이야기가 아니라 바로 한국씨티은행의 이성민 책임팀장의 성공스토리다. 이 팀장은 단국대학교 3학년 재학시절 HSBC에 근무하는 지인의 소개로 여신·금융 세일즈를 처음 접하며 금융업과 인연을 맺었다. 이듬해 2007년 2월 28살의 나이로 한국씨티은행 메디컬팀 닥터론 세일즈 사원으로 전격 입사하게 된 그는 본격적으로 금융인의 길을 걷기 시작했다.

누구보다도 열정을 쏟으며 좋은 일 굳은 일 가리지 않고 내달렸지만 사실 처음부터 만족할만한 성과를 냈던 것은 아니다. “입사하고 다음 달이 아버지 환갑이었는데 눈물이 나더군요. 그렇게 일하고 한 달 급여가 고작 교육비로 48만원이 나왔거든요. 명목 없는 아들이 되지 않으려 더 이를 갈며 일했습니다. 1년 뒤에 있었던 어머니 환갑은 기필코 호텔에서 한다고 제 자신과 약속했죠.” 실제로 그는 1년 뒤에 100여명의 친척들 앞에서 보란 듯이 어머니의 환갑잔치를 열었다.

노력한 끝에 얻는 성취감은 실로 달콤한 것이어서 이 팀장은 더 좋은 아들이 되기 위해, 더 성공한 사람이 되기 위해 더욱 일에 미쳐 살게 되었다. 물론 모든 과정이 순탄하지만은 않았다. 회사 조직에서 고비가 찾아오기도 했고, 자기 내면에서도 강함 회의감과 알 수 없는 딜레마로 신음하게 되었다. 급기야 극도의 우울증을 경험하고 자살을 생각하기도 했다. 절체절명의 순간에 그는 가족들을 떠 올렸다. 효를 다해야 할 부모님이 있었고, 자신을 믿어주는 아내와 분신과도 같은 아들·딸이 있었다. 그는 문자 그대로 죽을 각오로 일에 매진했고, 결국 모두가 인정하는 금융 분야의 혁신 리더가 되었다. 또한 이성민 팀장은 “자신의 위기에 큰 역할을 차지했던 것은 국내 최고의 빌라왕이라 불리는 채익종 대표의 파란만장한 인생스토리를 접하게 되면서 새로운 도전이 시작됐다”고 전했다.

현재 이성민 팀장은 누구보다도 발 빠르게 2014년의 문을 노크하고 있다. 내년 1월 중으로 대한민국 닥터전문 종합금융회사인 GMK(글로벌메디컬코리아)를 설립하여 여신, 증권, 보험, 부동산 투자 전문가 등으로 구성된 맞춤형 닥터 PB, 금융컨설팅 등을 펼칠 계획이기 때문이다.

금융의 첫 번째 노하우는 경청이다

이성민 팀장은 자신의 성공 키워드를 ‘경청’과 ‘진심’이라고 말한다. 그는 고객과 대면한 자리에서 말을 먼저 하지 않으려 조심한다. 고객이 뭘 필요로 하는지 알기위해서는 말하는 재주보다 듣는 재주가 필요하기 때문이다. 하지만 무엇보다 중요한 것은 진심이라고 한다. 모든 인연을 소중하게 여기며 먼저 진심으로 다가가야 고객도 진심으로 자신을 믿고 따른다는 것이다. “저는 고객을 위해 일하는 사람이지 금융기관을 위해 일하는 사람이 아닙니다. 그래서 모든 일을 고객의 입장에서 시작하는 것이 가장 중요하다고 믿고 있습니다. 바로 그러한 진성성이 제 가장 큰 노하우라고 할 수 있죠.” 이 팀장의 오늘 날의 성공에는 성실함도 빼놓을 수 없는 요소다. 그는 겨우 하루 3~4시간 잠을 청하며 근무를 하면서도 꿈이 있어 결코 피곤하지 않다고 말하는 사람이다.

그러한 이성민 팀장의 새로운 꿈은 2014년도와 함께 시작된다. 자신의 인생을 35세 이전과 36세 이후로 분류하는 그는 새로운 인생 2막의 시작점에서 누구보다 설레고 있다. “한 분야에서 성공해보니 더 큰 비즈니스가 하고 싶어졌어요. GMK(글로벌메디컬코리아)를 통해 자산가, 의사, 약사들에게 토탈 금융 서비스를 먼저 선보이게 됩니다. 죽기 살기로 3년이면 인생 2막에서도 챔피언이 될 거라 믿어 의심치 않습니다.” 그가 설립 예정인 GMK는 시중 모든 은행과 조인한다. 관련 분야 최고의 ‘꾼’들이 모여 있는 이 회사의 실무를 이 팀장이 맡게 되어 더욱 신뢰도가 높다. 향후 GK그룹으로 변신하여 금융, 부동산, 자산운용 등 금융관련 분야를 모두 접수한다는 것이 이성민 팀장의 야심찬 계획이다.

“죽을 결심을 하고 다시 일어나보니 세상에 필요한 것은 성공이 아니라 감동이었습니다. 가장 좋은 투자는 돈이 아니라 사람입니다. 저는 사람을 사는 금융인이 되기 위해 노력하겠습니다.” 많은 사람들의 가슴 속에 진심을 다해 열심히 일하면 성공할 수 있다는 희망의 씨앗을 흩뿌리고 있는 그. 성공한 사람보다는 자신이 행복하다 느끼는 사람, 타인에게 따뜻함을 주는 사람이 되고 싶다는 그. 다가오는 2014년. 이성민 팀장이 자신의 인생 제 2막이 열리는 그 무대 위에서 세상을 향해 멋있게 강력한 어퍼컷을 날리기를 기대해본다.

In one year after joining Citibank Korea, he achieved first place in his team and 2^nd for overall, in two years first place in the whole medical team against VIP customers like doctor, pharmacist, etc.and successful contracts for 5.5 billion won of credit loan, and in three years being appointed as medical team’s senior head and the top record in sales for the year. This noticeable performance result is not the story of a drama hero. It is thesuccess story of Lee Seong-min, senior team head of Citibank Korea. Team head Lee first came in touch with credit finance sales at introduction by an acquaintance working for HSBC when he was a junior student of Dankook University, forming a connection with financial business. Next year in February 2007, he joined Citibank Korea at the age of 28 as salesperson for medical team doctor loan and started his career earnestly as a financial person.

He moved heaven and earth more ardently than anyone else, but it is not a fact thathe achieved a satisfactory performance from the beginning. ““The next month after joining was my father’s 60^th birthday but it just brought tears to my eyes because I had earned only 480,000 won as monthly pay for educational expenses after working so hard. I worked even harder in order not to be an unworthy son. I firmly promised myself to hold my mother’s 60^th birthday party for the next year at a hotel.”” After one year, he actually held the formal celebration for his mother proudlybefore a hundred relatives.

A sense of achievement after a hard endeavor was so sweet that team head Lee came to be more engrossed in work to be a better son and successful person. Of course, it was not that everything went smooth. There occurred a hump coming from the corporate organization, or a strong skepticism and unknown dilemma from inside drove him in groan. At one time, he experienced an extreme melancholy and even thought of suicidal. At this dead-end situation, he visualized his family members. He had parents for whom he must do filial duties, a wife who relied on him,and son and daughter like his alter ego. Then, he was devoted to working his head off, literally, and at last became such an innovative leader in the financial field as to be recognized by all. Besides, team head Lee Seong-min hinted that there was another motive to start a new challenge when he heard the life story of President Chae Ik-jong, also called the king of villa in the nation, which was full of ups and downs.

Currently, team head Lee Seong-min is knocking on the year of 2014 ahead of anyone else. He is planning to establish GMK (Global Medical Korea), a comprehensive financial company for doctors, during January next year to carry on with customized doctor PB, financial consulting, etc., involvingspecialists in loan, securities, insurance, investment in real estate, etc.

The first knowhow on finance is listening carefully.

Team head Lee Seong-min says that his keyword to success is ‘listening’ and ‘sincerity.’ In a sitting with a customer, he tries not to speak ahead. It is because knowing what a customer needs requires a skill of listening, not of speaking. According to him, however, what matters most is sincerity. It is only when approaching first sincerely considering every connection important that the other truly relies on and follows his advice. ““I am the one who works for customers, not for a financial institution. That’s why I believe it most important to start everything in the shoes of customers. Such sincerity is my biggest knowhow.”” Team head Lee’s success today is also attributed to his honesty. Though working for only three or four hours a day after trying to get some sleep, he says he never feels tired because he has a dream.

His new dream is going to start with the year of 2014. Dividing his life before and after 35 years of age, he now feels his heart throbbing at the starting point of his act two as a new life. ““After I made success in one field, I have wanted to do a larger business. Through GMK (Global Medical Korea), we are providing total financial service preferentially for a man of property, medical doctor and pharmacist. I don’t doubt that just three years in ““do-or die””attitude will also lead me to championship in the latter part of my life.”” GMK he is scheduled to establish will join every commercial bank. Most reliably, team head Leeis going to undertake the practical business of this company staffed by the top-class specialists of relevant fields. Team head Lee Seong-min has an ambitious plan to take over all finance-related fields from finance to real estate, asset management, etc. by transforming this company into GK Group in the future.

““When I rose up again with determination to die, I realized that what the world takes is not success but emotion. The best investment is not in money, but in man. I will make efforts to become a financial person who buys a man.””He is scattering the seeds of hope in the hearts of many people that by applying oneself with heart and soul they can become a successful person.
