스타 사회적 기업으로 인정받은 막강 뮤지컬 극단 ‘날으는자동차’
최근 문화수준이 높아지고 여가 활용에 대한 관심이 커지면서 연극이나 뮤지컬을 관람하는 관객층이 크게 늘어났다. 하지만 여기에 자신이 아예 그 무대의 주인공이 되기 위해 모여든 사람들이 있다. 그들은 ‘날으는자동차’에 올라타면 누구라도 뮤지컬 공연의 주인공이 될 수 있고, 더불어 환경문제 등과 같은 사회적 고민도 함께 나눌 수 있다고 말한다. 뮤지컬 극단으로써는 유례없이 환경부산하 비영리민간단체로 서울형 사회적 기업으로 인정받은 ‘날으는자동차’의 우승주 단장을 만나봤다.
평범한 사람들이 만드는 우리들의 이야기.
‘날으는자동차’의 우승주 단장은 1994년 공연기획 일로 사업을 시작하였으나 실패를 맛보았다. 그러다 우연히 특기적성 교육사업에 뮤지컬 강사를 파견하는 사업으로 대박을 터트리면서 뮤지컬의 가능성을 미리 내다보게 되었다. “저는 사실 뮤지컬보다는 교육에 더 관심이 많습니다. 교육정책의 중심에서 도태된 아이들의 문제, 환경문제, 사회약자 층의 문제 등을 이야기하기 위해 뮤지컬이라는 장르는 수단적으로 쓰게 된 겁니다.” 2003년 60여개의 학교에서 시작한 뮤지컬 특기적성 교육사업은 2007년까지 600개 초등학교로 120명의 강사를 파견했을 정도로 성장했다. 그러다 2005년 어린이들이 직접 배우가 되는 어린이 뮤지컬 극단을 구상하고 ‘어린이들에게 신나는 하루를 선물하자’라는 취지로 극단 ‘날으는자동차’를 설립하게 이른다. ‘날으는자동차’는 현재 그 규모와 영역이 확대되어 서울, 분당, 일산에 12개 극단을 가지고 있으며 180명의 단원을 두고 있다. ‘날으는자동차’는 자체적으로 대본 작업부터 음악, 연출, 안무, 기획, 영상, 사진, 의상, 소품, 조명 등 무대화에 필요한 전 과정을 소화하고 있다. 그렇게 만들어진 25편의 창작 뮤지컬은 20만 명이상의 관객에게 공연되었다. 어린이 뮤지컬 극단으로 시작한 ‘날으는자동차’는 자연스레 그 아이들이 자라면서 전문공연단 ‘주니어단’, 청소년 영어극단인 ‘드림프로젝트’, 대학생극단인 ‘날뛰기프로젝트’가 만들어졌다. 최근에는 주부, 직장인 극단인 ‘동행’, 실버극단 ‘늴리리’까지 생겨나 전 연령대를 아우르는 시민극단으로 발전하였다. ‘날으는자동차’의 성공 요소는 평범한 시민들이 직접 참여하는 뮤지컬이라는 차별화에 기인한다. 그들은 한 공간에 모여 그들의 이야기와 우리가 살아가는 이 시대에 대한 이야기를 공유하고, 그 이야기는 창작뮤지컬로 만들어져 무대에 오르게 된다. 그 에너지는 고스란히 객석에 앉아 있는 관객에게 전해진다. 그것은 예술의 깊이가 주는 경이로움 보다 바로 우리 삶 가까이에 밀착되어 있는 ‘공감’이라는 이름의 에너지다.
평범한 사람들의 특별한 도전
스타 사회적 기업에 걸맞게 사회적인 이슈를 공연으로 풀어내고 싶다는 우승주 단장은 환경뮤지컬의 대한 남다른 애착을 갖고 있었다. 그는 환경뮤지컬 ‘지구를 지켜라’를 매 시즌 이어오면서 사람들의 이목을 끌기 어려운 환경에 대한 메시지도 뮤지컬이라는 장르와 만나면 사람들에게 친숙하면서도 거부감 없이 파고 들 수 있다는 것을 발견했다. 특히 사람들이 더 이상 환경을 훼손하지 않도록 어른이 되면 모든 산을 사버리겠다는 어린이 단원을 보면서 그는 환경뮤지컬이 자라나는 아이들에게도 중요한 역할을 할 수 있으리라 확신하게 됐다. 또한 7년째 새터민, 취약계층 청소년, 실버세대 돌보기 등의 사회서비스를 이어오고 있는 우승주 단장은 소외된 이들의 이야기를 지속적으로 만들 계획도 밝혔다. 새터민은 탈북민들의 애환, 취약계층의 외로움, 실버의 치매 또는 범죄 예방 등 함께 살아가는 이들에 대한 관심의 끈을 놓지 않고 있다. 특히 올해는 ‘학교폭력’과 ‘왕따’를 주제로 한 작품을 기획중이다. ‘날으는자동차’의 주요 고객이 아동, 청소년임을 감안하면 ‘학교폭력’과 ‘왕따’에 관심 갖는 것은 어쩜 자연스러운 현상이라 할 수 있다. “쭉삼이라고 불리는 아이가 있었어요. 시험을 치면 쭉 3번만 체크한다고 해서 붙은 별명이었죠. 친구 관계도, 학교 교육도 적응하지 못했던 그 아이는 처음 나와 눈을 마주치는 것도 힘들어 했습니다. 그렇게 저의 집에서 우리는 2개월 동거를 시작했습니다. 전 그 아이에게 대학로에 가서 노숙자 한명과 점심 먹기, 인생이 무엇인지를 말해줄 사진 15컷을 찍기와 같은 다양한 미션을 제공했습니다. 그 아이는 진지한 태도로 매 미션을 성공적으로 수행해나갔습니다. 그리고 저는 안타까웠습니다. 쭉삼이는 공부 못하는 아이, 타고난 왕따로 취급 받기엔 너무 많은 재능을 가지고 있었습니다. 천편일률적인 학교 교육 속에서 하위 30%로 낙인찍힌 아이들은 과연 누가 책임지죠? 어른들이 그 가능성을 감금한 채 우리 아이에게 기회를 주지 못한 것뿐입니다.” 우승주 단장은 쭉삼이와 같은 아이들이 ‘날으는자동차’를 통해 친구를 사귀고, 자신의 가능성을 발견하고, 꿈을 설계해 나갈 수 있도록 모든 노력을 아끼지 않고 있다. ‘날으는자동차’ 아이들은 직접 배우로 공연에 참여하면서 공연의 주제에 대해 생각하고, 서로 의견을 주고받으며 자신들의 언어로 살아있는 대사를 만들어낸다. 그리고 공연을 통해 창의력과 표현력을 키우고 협동심을 배우며 자신감을 얻게 된다. 말더듬이었던 아이가 전교회장선거에 출마하여 전교회장으로 선출되기도 하고, 가정불화를 겪던 아이가 정서적 안정을 찾는 것을 보면서 우승주 단장은 뮤지컬의 교육적 효과를 다시 한 번 확신했다.
발칙한 상상으로 행복을 꿈꾸다.
“저의 경쟁력은 무엇이든 ‘소통하는 재미’를 추구한다는 겁니다. 뮤지컬 극단은 많습니다. 하지만 ‘날으는자동차’와 같은 뮤지컬 극단은 어디에도 없습니다. 앞으로 저만이 할 수 있는 프로젝트를 이어가고 싶습니다.” 그는 오는 4월에 있을 시장님과의 정책 토론의 PT를 3분 연극으로 연출하여 발표할 예정이다. 그는 사람들에게 지루하기만 한 PT도 재미나게 진행 할 수 있다는 것은 체험시켜주고 싶다고 했다. 그는 뮤지컬을 이용한 다양한 프로젝트를 시도 중이고 그 결과는 언제나 ‘성공적이다’는 평가다. 한 예로 웃고 노래하고 춤추는 사이에 자연스럽게 영어공부를 할 수 있는 영어뮤지컬을 기획했다. 그는 주입식 교육에 취학한 아이들에게 스트레스는 줄이고, 공부도 재미있다는 것을 알려주기 위해 교육과 뮤지컬 장르와의 크로스오버에 도전했다. 우승주 단장은 영어뮤지컬 캠프, 워크샵, 프로젝트의 다양한 시도를 이어왔고, 올 여름은 구청과 영어뮤지컬 교육프로그램을 만들 예정이다. 그래서 관활 초중고로 찾아가 시연할 6시간짜리 영어학습뮤지컬을 준비 중이다. 그는 가족의 대화도, 학교 교육도, 기업의 연수도 뮤지컬로 하면 재미있고 효과적이라 자신했다. 꼭 무대에 올리는 작품이 아니더라도 일상 속에서 뮤지컬 배우처럼 상상하고 소통하며 창작하다 보면 지금보다 훨씬 재밌고, 건강한 사회를 만들 수 있다는 것이 그의 설명이다. “저의 꿈은 뮤지컬 대안극단을 만드는 것입니다. 어린아이에서 실버, 평범한 시민에서 전문예술가까지 누구든 원하면 자신의 잠재력을 발굴하고, 또 그 재능으로 소통을 실천하는 그런 극단 말입니다. 예술의 주요 기능도 소통에 있듯이 우리가 가진 가능성이 꽃 피기만 하면, 그 향기는 자연스럽게 피어날 것이라 생각합니다. 매일매일 도전하고, 매일매일 즐거운 무대의 축제가 펼쳐지는 도시. 상상만 해도 즐겁지 않습니까?” 날으는자동차를 타고 재미난 접촉사고를 도모하고 있는 우승주단장의 자유로운 비상을 눈여겨보자.
An Enormous Troupe ‘Flying Car’ that is authorized as a star social company
The viewers for the play or the musical performances are getting higher in amount as the cultural standard has been advanced and the interest on leisure activities is also increasing. There are some people who want to be leading roles about that. They say everyone can take a leading role and even share the social considerations like other environmental issues altogether. Here is talking about a Troupe ‘Flying Car’ and Power Korea met a leader Woo Seung-Joo of that organization. Actually, ‘Flying Car’ got an authority for a social company as non-profit organization and this is no former history like this before as a musical theater.
Our story created by normal people
‘Flying Car’ theater leader Woo Seung-Joo started the performance business on his own in 1994, but he failed it. But, he restarted his business about sending a musical instructor to the specialty aptitude educational business and it was a smash. Then, he found out the future of the musical in Korea.
“I am more interested in the education rather than the musical. To talk about the kids’ problem out of school, the environmental issue and the neglected people in our society, I am using the genre of the performance, frankly.” His business started in 60 schools in 2003 but now it has grown up to like they sent 120 instructors to 600 schools in contract until 2007. While improving the business, he established a troupe ‘Flying Car’, which is children work on everything about the musical, for example, they are playing the roles. He wanted to give something like a gift for them to have a great day. Now, it has been wide, so there are 12 theaters in Seoul, Bundang and Ilsan with 180 members. They are taking care of every step for the musical by themselves. So far, they have shown their 25 creative musicals and over 200,000 viewers watched them.
It started as a kid musical troupe but nowadays, it grew up like some troupes for the junior, the senior, housewives, normal workers, and even old people, so it seems they pretty much cover every generation. They gather to talk about their lives and the time they live in. all the stories they told are the materials for the stage in the end. And the energy from them is just giving the audience. That is called as sympathy, which is not glorious but so close to life.
Special challenge by ordinary people
A leader Woo Seung-Joo who would like to approach the social issues with performance has affection for the musical, which is somewhat typical to think of as a star social company. He saw people could be interested in the matter of the global environmental problems easily with the musical every year and the crucial motif was the environmental musical ‘Protect the Earth’. By that, he realized the difficult issues can be easygoing with the musical and there was no repulsion against that. Especially, he was sure that environmental musical would be an important part for the children. Some kids say they want to buy all the mountains when growing up. On the other than, this year, he is thinking of a work talking about ‘school bullying’ and ‘school violence’. If we think the members are all students, these subjects are just naturally taking the consideration.
“There was a child called ‘Jooksamee’. The reason why he got that nickname was he always checked three times whenever he had a test. He did apply himself to school or friendship and he was afraid of having eye contact with me. However, he started living in my place for 2 months. I gave him a mission like eating lunch with a homeless person in Daehakro or taking 15 photos that might tell what the life is as a mission for him. He was quite serious and made what I said. They were successful, but I was so sorry for him. ‘Jooksamee’ had too much talent to be bullied by other students. I have a question. Who will be responsible for kids who are marked as bottom 30% in school around the rote daily life? Adults locked them up and they didn’t give any chance and this is it.”
Throughout the performance, the children can learn how to express themselves and raise the creativity and even get the confidence. For instance, a stutterer became a leader for the school or a child who suffered from the family affair could have a comfort. And he saw all proves and assured the effect of the musical education.
Dreaming of happiness with outrageous imagination
“My competitiveness is that I am chasing after the interactive fun with anything. There are tons of musical theaters, but nothing like ‘Flying Car’. I would like to do the project that only I can do afterwards.” He is supposed to have a presentation with the Seoul Mayor in April and it will be the play form within 3 minutes. Besides, he is trying to start various projects using the musical and his previous works were always successful.
A leader Woo Seung-Joo has tried to do English musical camp, workshop and some projects in variety and this summer, he is supposed to make some English musical educational program. So, it is on the way to go to schools under the jurisdiction for a 6-hour-program. He is sure of that family conversation, school education and company training program can be fun if they are made of the form of musical.
“My dream is to make the alternative musical team, which is a theater where everyone like children, elderly people and other ordinary people or professionals could join anytime so that they could find out their potential talents and communicate with that one another. Imagine a city where pleasant stage and feasts happens everyday!
