중세국어 연구의 ‘大家’
한국외국어대학교 한국어교육과 남성우 명예교수
유네스코가 선정한 최고의 문자 ‘한글’은 인간이 만든 문자 중 가장 완벽한 문자라는 찬사를 받고 있으며, 과학적이고 체계적인 자모음은 약 11,000개 이상의 소리를 표현해내는 우수하고 자랑스러운 대한민국의 문화유산이다. 훈민정음의 역사는 15세기부터 시작되었고 현재 세계 2,900개의 언어 가운데 탄생 기록을 가지고 있는 유일한 문자로 인정받고 있기도 하다. 한국외국어대학교 한국어교육과 남성우 교수는 이러한 훈민정음의 역사를 연구하고 중세국어의 올바른 이해를 돕기 위해 애쓰고 있다. 중세국어 분야의 최고 권위자라는 평가를 받고 있는 그를 만났다.
자랑스러운 대한민국의 문자 ‘한글’
우리가 지금 쓰고 있는 ‘한글’에 대해 우리 국민은 얼마나 제대로 알고 있을까? 한글의 기본 자모음은 총 24개로 일본의 약 1/4 정도에 불과하지만 발음과 표현에 있어서는 그 어떤 문자보다도 뛰어나다. 중국어가 약 400개, 일본어가 약 300개의 소리를 표현해낼 수 있는 반면 24개의 문자로 11,000개 이상의 소리를 내는 ‘한글’의 우수성은 이미 수많은 사례를 통해 입증된 바 있다. 세계에서 가장 많은 발음을 표기할 수 있는 문자이면서도 단순하고 쉬운 체계로 대한민국 국민은 문맹률 0%라는 경이적인 기록도 갖게 되었다. 전 세계 한글 사용의 인구수가 프랑스보다도 높은 세계 12위로 인도네시아의 찌아찌아족이 한글을 공용문자로 채택한 것은 이미 국내 언론에서도 보도된 바 있다. 한글은 영어와 마찬가지로 표음문자이며 소리와 문자의 일치성이 뛰어나 습득에 용이함이 있다.
국내 최고의 중세국어 연구가 ‘남성우’
한국외국어대학교 한국어교육과 남성우 교수는 국내 최고의 중세국어 학자이다. 중세국어는 훈민정음이 창제된 세종 때부터 중종에 이르기까지의 국어를 일컫는다. 남 교수는 현재 한글의 뿌리가 되는 중세국어를 연구하며 이것을 온전히 보존하기 위한 각고의 노력을 기울이고 있다. 국력 신장과 함께 한국어의 위상이 지속적으로 상승하고 있는 추세라고 강조한 그는 한류가 한국어 보급에 결정적 역할을 하며 다시 한 번 한글의 우수성을 세계에 알리는 결정적 계기를 마련했다고 설명했다.
1992년부터 1993년까지 1년 간 일본의 칸다외어대학(神田外語大學) 한국어학과 교수로 재직하며 한국어의 달라진 위상을 새삼 느낀 그는 중세국어 즉 15세기 16세기의 국어를 연구하며 학자로서의 사명을 다했다. 또한 1975년 부임부터 줄곧 한국외국어대학에서 한국어교육과 교수로 후학 양성에 힘썼던 그는 교육자로서 그리고 학자로서의 본분에 최선을 다하며 현재에 이르기까지 그 역량을 발휘하고 있다. 이와 더불어 1980년대부터 지금까지 190여 회의 정기 모임을 가진 ‘국어사 연구회’의 회장으로 한국어 사랑을 실천해 오고 있다. ‘국어사 연구회’는 각 대학 교수들과 국어사 연구자들의 모임이다.
남 교수는 중세국어에 관한 방대한 분량의 저서를 두 권 간행하였다. 2007년에 간행한 『중세국어 문헌의 번역 연구』가 대한민국 학술원 2007년도 우수학술도서로 선정되었고 2011년에 펴낸 『구급방언해와 구급간이방의 동의어 연구』가 2012년도 대한민국 학술원 선정 우수학술도서로 선정되었다. 『구급방언해와 구급간이방의 동의어 연구』는 15세기에 간행된 두 의서 『구급방언해』와 『구급간이방』에서 확인되는 동의어를 고찰할 목적으로 남 교수가 10여 년 간의 준비 끝에 집필을 완성했다. 그는 이 책을 통해 중세국어의 올바른 이해를 돕는 데 지대한 역할을 했으며 현재는 2001년에 간행된 『월인석보와 법화경언해의 동의어 연구』의 증보판을 내기 위해 작업에 열중하고 있다. 그는 국내에 아직 소개된 바 없는 『월인석보 사전』을 만드는 것이 학자로서의 최종 목표라고 말한다.
그의 식을 줄 모르는 열정은 여전히 현재 진행형이며 높아진 한국어의 위상만큼이나 높은 기개로 ‘한국어’ 발전에 이바지할 것이라고 믿어 의심치 않는다. 남성우 교수의 『월인석보 사전』을 기대해 본다.

Hangeul, Korean alphabet, which was selected as the world's best letter by UNESCO has also been hailed as the most perfect and immaculate language established by human beings. Its scientific and systematically-made consonants and vowels can move even more than 11,000 sounds into letters. The history of Hunminjeongeum(訓民正音) goes way back to the 15C. It has been recognized as the only letter which has a record of the birth among 2,900 languages throughout the world. Nam Seong-wu, a professor of Korean Education at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies has been making his efforts on studying the history of Hunminjeongeum and helping a proper understanding on Middle Korean. PowerKorea interviewed Nam, an authority in Middle Korean studies.
‘Hangeul', a proud heritage of Korea
How much do we exactly know about Hangeul? It is basically comprised of 24 consonants and vowels. The number of the alphabet only accounts for a fourth of that of Japan. In terms of pronunciation and expression, however, it is more outstanding than any other letter in the world. While Chinese and Japanese can make 400 and 300 sounds into letters respectively, Korean can express more than 11,000 sounds with only 24 letters. Korea also set a remarkable record of having the illiteracy of 0%. The number of population using Hangeul reached the top 12 in the world, higher than France. It has already been reported that Indonesia's small tribe, Cia-Cia adopted to Hangeul as its official letter. Same as English, Hangeul is a phonogram and easy to learn as it has a high consistency with a sound and a letter.
The authority of Middle Korean
Nam is an authoritative scholar of Middle Korean. Middle Korean was used during from King Sejong, the inventor of Hunminjeongeum to King Jungjong.
He has put a great deal of effort in conserving Middle Korean as it is the root of Hangeul. The status of Korean has steadily grown as Korea's national power has greatly increased. He also said Korean Wave (aka Hallyu) played a crucial role in introducing the excellence of Korean language to the world. When he taught Korean language at Kanda University of International Studies from 1992 to 1993, he could feel the change in the status of Korean language. Going back to Korea, he continued to study Middle Korean as a scholar. He has taught at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies since 1975 to foster younger students. As a scholar, he has also demonstrated his ability.
Moreover, he has been a president of 'Korean Language History Study Club' since 1980s. It is a gathering between professors and scholars of Korean language history.
Nam has written massive pages of two books on Middle Korean, that is, Study on Translation of Middle Korean Literatures published in 2007 and Study on Synonyms identified in Gugeupbangeonhae(救急方諺解) and Gugeupganibang(救急簡易方) published in 2011. Two books were designated as outstanding research books by The National Academy of Sciences.
He completed to write Study on Synonyms identified in Gugeupbangeonhae and Gugeupganibang after study for 10 years. Through the publication of the books, he has played a crucial role in helping the understanding on Middle Korean. As of now, he has been concentrating on working on publication of an enlarged edition of Studies on Synonyms in Wolinseokbo(月印釋譜) and Beophwagyeongeonhae(法華經諺解) published in 2001. He says his final goal as a scholar is to publish a Wolinseokbo Dictionary.
His enduring passion is still going on. We believe it would make a great contribution to progress of Korean language. We are looking forward to meeting his next book Wolinseokbo Dictionary.
