¡°Good enterprise makes a good-taste duck.¡±

¡®Joowon Asta Ducks¡¯, a domestic leader, jumping toward a global market

Lee Woo-jin, CEO of Joowon Asta Ducks Co., Ltd.

IMG_1706 copy.jpg

Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, an eco-friendly outdoor brand, said, ¡°No business can exist in a dead star.¡± This means the essence of an enterprise is seeking profit but that no enterprise can remain alive without co-prosperity with local communities and partnership companies. Like this, there are enterprises increasing that attach more importance to the values shared rather than for the sake of our enterprise only, which is very inspiring. Joowon Asta Ducks Co., Ltd., too, has annually donated a scholarship of 10 million won to an elementary school and middle school within the jurisdiction wanting to help adolescents who are expected to lead the national economy in the future. Though direct corporate activities such as activating economy and creating jobs are important, it is time that fulfilling social responsibility was finishing touches of corporate management as not expenses but investment, said Lee Woo-jin, CEO of Joowon Asta Ducks. We met him to hear his opinion about good management and good things to eat.

¡®Joowon Asta Ducks¡¯ built up to a national leader in ducks

No one in this country could match in the love of ducks ¡®Lee Woo-jin¡¯ who has loved the animal for over a decade. Since the foundation of Joowon Asta Ducks in March 2002, he has never spent a single day without thinking of ducks. Saying it would have no end to write a book about trouble in the heart he had for those dozen years, he recalled his past days confessing that he even had a bitter feeling for his unrequited love for ducks. Nonetheless, CEO Lee is now able to laugh because his business has built up so as to remind anyone about ¡®Joowon Asta Ducks¡¯ as ¡®the leading Korean ducks¡¯ in name and substance after all those times of hardship. Lately, the name of Joowon Asta Ducks has become so well-known even to overseas that Paraguayan ambassador to Korea and its chamber of commerce president visited this place for benchmarking. They were especially surprised at the thorough disinfection system of livestock raisers and the factory, realizing that such sanitary management is the key to providing safe food. CEO Lee Woo-jin declared, ¡°In this centenarian age, the most important factor to health and longevity is considered things to eat. Especially, ducks are already widely known as the invigorating food on the table and in place as a popular food enjoying preference, agreeable to our people¡¯s palate. I will contribute to activating such food from ducks and developing the related industry.¡±

Eco-friendly sanitation ducks without using antibiotics

Joowon Asta Ducks is well-reputed as an enterprise with a world-class competitiveness and stockbreeding technology by dint of longtime knowhow and incessant R&D on foods. The farm directly managed by Joowon Asta Ducks, located at Jinchon, Choongbuk, is a large-scale facility of 86,000 Pyeong, at which the reporter couldn¡¯t but marvel when making a round of every corner. Based on sanitation and disinfection, the farm is equipped with efficient system and an automated poultry processing factory revealing scrupulous efforts everywhere to provide consumers with the most fresh and delicious ducks.

CEO Lee said, ¡°Joowon Asta Ducks are not just an eco-friendly product this way, but its greatest strength is not using any antibiotics in the breeding phase. It is our secret of the ducks¡¯ taste and efficacy to breed them with feed in addition of Asataxanthin, which amounts to 1,000 times as much effect as vitamin E, for doubling the efficacy as low-fat, high-protein food and to have the livestock grow up freely in an area with very clean air and water.¡±

For these reasons and others, Joowon Asta Ducks was selected in 2010 for customer-centered- management enterprise, which was estimated by Korea Customer Agency and certified by the Fair Trade Commission. Further, it was honorably selected as the model environmental company and as the most excellent duck butcher by wining high marks in ¡®Slaughterhouse HACCP operation Level Evaluation¡¯ hosted by Consumers Union of Korea. All of these are the result of efforts made by all the staff of Joowon Asta to provide the best possible food for the nation. It seems that even continued recession can provide a new opportunity for a solid enterprise like Joowon Asta Ducks. CEO Lee said, ¡°Looking back on the past one year since closing of the controversial Korea-U.S. FTA, it has turned out more gain than loss. This means that it pays to differentiate ourselves and preoccupy the global market with prepared competitiveness rather than protective trade. It is the right order to put rearing policy before protectionism.¡± He emphasized that if who does what is decided with livestock raisers based on technology and capital, FTA would bring on the right competitiveness in this global age.

Ducks appealing to the global palate

¡®Ducks¡¯ are very popular as a cheap and high-quality eat-out menu among office workers and housewives who must tighten their belts. In the past, it was believed that ducks were favored by adults only or mainly used for medicine, and further inflicted by AI influenza, etc. but the government¡¯s immediate countermeasure brought a blessing in disguise with the consumers¡¯ ¡°learning-effect,¡± embossing the positive aspect of the ducks. CEO Lee emphasized that ¡°This is it.¡± In his eyes, despite the eat-out culture widely spread, the economy is believed to slow down with time, which will highlight the preference for ducks, which are both inexpensive and healthy, even more.

Not just in our country, Asians who are living abroad rather keep a high interest in ducks. An enterprise named ¡®King Call¡¯ located in Toronto, Canada, is such one that supplies products to the North American market and it is said that their most favorite meat is ducks. Joowon Asta Ducks has already finished international registration of their brand with Canada and has currently filed for an international patent, receiving royalty from the locality through instructing manufacturing technology. ¡°This place with developed garden culture and parties goes well with ducks in concept,¡± explains Joowon Asta Ducks. Saying, ¡°We are concentrating our efforts on developing products suited for the customer needs by developing food from ducks diversely meeting each concept regardless of home and abroad,¡± CEO Lee clarified that he wants to open the way to both direct and indirect exports more diversely in the future contributing to the development of national economy whatsoever.

A scamper of Joowon Asta Ducks toward the global market

CEO Lee Woo-jin, who also serves as audit of Korea Duck Association has an endless love for ducks. Though the association was founded 20 years ago, it is just 5 or 6 years since it began live activity. Now the association is making advance day by day since despite national interest in sanitary and safe food, the related industry cannot grow up without more solid information. CEO Lee himself is making direct and indirect efforts through the activity of promoting consumption of ducks in order to popularize ducks and solidify the status of the Duck Association. He said ¡°From this year on, restaurants over the size of 33m2 (10 Pyeong) are supposed to strengthen the custom of attaching the information of origin and enhancing reliability by applying the certification mark from Korea Duck Association together. Large or small efforts based on the association will make the food from ducks loved more.¡± He also proposed that the government manage related institution from one ministry to exercise consistency and efficiency of the business. In this global age, ¡®Joowon Asta Ducks¡¯, a national leader in duck industry, shoulders the heavier responsibility. Currently, our biggest competitor in the global market is China and Brazil. To compete with them, we should be higher in price competitiveness as well as in safety and sanitation. Together with this, another task to tackle is rearing able persons who can proceed with incessant R&D and broadening up the pie for the limited material called ducks. Lastly, CEO Lee Woo-jin emphasized, ¡°Basically, people are like-minded anywhere on earth. That¡¯s why we are laying the biggest emphasis on ¡®the spirit of serving the customer.¡¯ He added, ¡°If we produce products tasty and rich enough in nutrition with such sincerity as toward our own family, I am sure we can have a strong presence in the global market, too.¡± Looking around the farm facility under direct management of Joowon Asta Ducks, one can find that every corner speaks for itself. The thoroughness and cleanliness that won¡¯t allow a single blind spot in the area of 86,000 Pyeong ? this is the competitiveness of Joowon Asta Ducks aiming at the global market today.
