¡°Microalgae Farm opens a new horizon for new renewable energies.¡±

Low-cost, high-efficiency and eco-friendly energy to replace oil and atomic energy after global warming and Japan¡¯s nuclear crisis

Environmental pollution including global warming is pushing up the market value of bio-energy that replaces fossil fuel. Especially, as the U.S. president Obama recently referred to an alternative energy source produced from microalgae, these plant microalgae called ¡°moss¡± in Korean is being highlighted as clean energy and industrial material resources. In the mean time, there is also a domestic innovative enterprise drawing attention that specializes in producing microalgae. Microalgae Farm Inc. (CEO Park Shin-ho), an agricultural corporation, is running a microalgae farm in Chungbuk Province without a sea area and growing freshwater microalgae to export them for each kind of energies and industrial materials.

Microalgae are a composition of organisms using atmospheric or underwater carbon dioxide and water, which is currently known to be over 300 thousand kinds in distribution. These microalgae are the primary producer of oxygen and organisms by photosynthesis and responsible for around half the photosynthesis on the whole earth.


Microalgae Farm and a microalgae biodiesel power plant for building a low-carbon green growth village

Microalgae Farm at Boeun-gun, Chungbuk, is pushing ahead the biomass transfer process of changing biomass into renewable fuel, such as biodiesel, bio-ethanol, etc., and producing compounds like bio-plastic and electricity. Microalgae energy produced this way comes to be used for an alternative energy source using the generation of biodiesel internal combustion engines. How large a marketability could microalgae have as an alternative energy source? Microalgae have the merit of high flexibility in cultivation because of its diverse species. Microalgae, which grows 2 to 4 times a day, is over 300 times better in productivity than palm oil (While palm oil produces 20 tons of oil annually from 270 trees for 2ha, microalgae oil produces 20 tons of oil daily from 2,000 cultivation containers for 2ha) and besides, capable of producing an alternative energy source through synthesis of organisms. With a high lipid content of 61.1% on average against weight and a high lipid productivity of average 183.33ppm/day (based on KIST test records), microalgae is high in the content of protein, vitamin and mineral enjoying highlight as a new renewable energy source in these days with high international oil prices. Especially, since Fukushima nuclear crisis, more and more enterprises in advanced countries including France, U.S. and Japan are introducing microalgae biodiesel engine that can substitute for oil and atomic power. According to Korea Electric Power Corp., as of the end of 2012, 0.5% of total domestic electricity is supplied though the generation of internal combustion engine capable of output with microalgae oil. In fact, POSCO should annually reduce 960 thousand tons of CO2 and Samsung Electronics 430 thousand tons. But POSCO, by investing in the production of 321 thousand tons of microalgae oil, can automatically reach the target of greenhouse gas reduction without a separate burden of costs and Samsung Electronics can reach the target by investing in the production of 143 thousand tons of microalgae oil. Since cultivation technology of Microalgae Farm at Boeun-gun, Chungbuk, can produce 10 tons of microalgae oil daily for 1 ha, POSCO¡¯s securing 100ha and Samsung Electronics¡¯ 50ha of microalgae cultivation farm combined with a microalgae biodiesel power plant will set Korea in place as the Mecca of carbon finance in Northeast Asia with the opening of carbon-trading permits market in 2015.


Production of eco-friendly energy by cultivating microalgae will create incomes for farmers back home in the age of FTA.

The market size for biodiesel and biogas is expected to grow from around 1.317 trillion won in 2012 to 4.5203 trillion won in 2020 showing a gradual increase in demands for microalgae. CEO Park Shin-ho explained, ¡°It is possible to maximize the effect of import replacement by producing microalgae oil at Microalgae Farm and supplying it directly to biodiesel manufacturer and diesel power plant. Besides, even though shale gas is rapidly coming to the fore as an alternative for atomic power plant after Fukushima nuclear crisis, it will not be carried into the nation until after 2017 and that in just a very small portion and with rather a more serious problem of CO2 emissions. So Microalgae Farm is the only way at the moment to replace the nuclear power plant with a reasonable cost, increase the farmhouse incomes and make energy self-sufficiency possible for our people.¡± Come 2015 it is going to fully ban producing bio-fuel using food crops and enforce and expand the compulsory system of combining with new renewable energies (RFS for transport and RPS for electricity), which is gradually increasing the need for producing new renewable energies using microalgae that can produce bio-oil more inexpensively than waste cooking oil. For cultivating microalgae, securing alga seeds with high lipid contents and cultivating technology are important for culturing algae, the previous phase of biodiesel. The Microalgae Farm, an agricultural corporation, is using alga seeds that have obtained the KIST test records of meeting both the lipid content of 61.1¡¾5.6% and lipid productivity of 183.33¡¾16.67ppm/day for the first time in the nation. In the method of cultivating and harvesting microalgae, too, the farm is applying mass collection equipment for algae using robot arms and 10t cultivating container module pattern, instead of the existing Open Pond and PBR(Photo Bio-reactor) method, which are estimated by experts to be a technology of securing commercial values. ¡°They say that microalgae are difficult in recovery. That is, it takes much expense to extract oil by separating algae from water because microalgae dissolve in water. In our case, recovery of microalgae takes no expenses. We supply the optimum nutrients to algae around 61.1% in lipid content for their growth of 2 to 4 times a day and mass together, so all the farmers have to do is take algae out of water with a filter and dry them up with a dryer. That¡¯s how we can secure high cost competitiveness with much lower production costs than Dubai crude oil or shale gas.¡±


Around 78% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to light oil

Microalgae Farm at Boeun-gun, Chungbuk, has the technology of cultivating microalgae on the world¡¯s largest scale of production per unit area except France. It can be appraised that price competitiveness is even higher than France¡¯s and the secret is the cultivation container pattern capable of producing 10kg of algae crude oil and 10kg of algae cake such as eco-friendly feed, fertilizer, cosmetics, etc. from daily cultivation of 20kg algae per culture container standardized in the scale of 235cm diameter, 265cm height, 75% sunlight transmission and 10t water capacity. The structure is capable of generating electricity of 3,000kw per hour by extracting 10-ton microalgae oil daily for 1 ha.

When compared to light oil, biodiesel can reduce CO2 emissions by around 78 percent. Microalgae oil consumes around 300 tons of CO2 per production of 100 tons. Saying, ¡°Microalgae can answer the activity of ¡°cap-and-trade¡± market through securing carbon trading, CEO Park Shin-ho anticipated, ¡°If compulsory supply of new renewable energies expands in the future, we will be able to lead the international carbon finance market.¡±

CEO Park Shin-ho is planning to construct innovative clusters related to microalgae industry in Chungbuk and push forward microalgae biodiesel, bio-ethanol, bio-plastic, biodiesel power plants, etc. Especially, as a grandson of Kim Gwang-hyun, senior pastor of Gyeongbuk Andong Church who successively served as interim legislative committee member for South Korea under U.S. military administration, Presbyterian Church of Korea president, directors of Yonsei Univ. Soongsil Univ. and Kyeimyung Univ. etc., CEO Park Shin-ho also clarified his ambition about making Korea Habitat Microalgae Energy Self-support Village at Eumseong-gun, Chungbuk, which is a home town for the current UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, to provide both jobs and housing for houseless people around the country, and inducing a microalgae jet fuel oiling center in Cheongju International Airport by the opening of Pyeongchang Winter Olympics to make ripple effect on local economy.

¡°Currently, our country is in danger of shutting down all domestic atomic power plants unless constructing extra nuclear dump sites by 2016. Incidentally, the astronomical expenses for a dump site are burial ones completely irrelevant to farmhouse incomes, so wouldn¡¯t it be better to use the expenses for spreading microalgae biodiesel power plants? That would be a direct help to national economy by reducing air pollution, relieving radioactive danger, establishing energy self-supporting economy cheaper than atomic power plant, creating green jobs, increasing farmer incomes, etc. even if atomic power plants will go to full shutdown in 2016. Especially, for a farmhouse, it will be a good income to parcel out each cultivation container that allows cultivating 20kg of algae daily for 3.9 million won and purchasing algae of each 1,000kg for 260 thousand won while possible to generate capital in the rural sector by developing creative tour packages. Besides, by the effect of increasing population from making Korea Habitat microalgae village and coming back home to a rural community, we can expect to create local jobs for ten thousand people for each of Boeun, Eumseong, Goesan, Okchon, Yeongdong-gun, etc.:

Microalgae Farm, an agricultural corporation, was selected as the object of investment consulting project by the institute of agricultural policy funds management. Currently, the farm is driving the project of incubating agricultural food management in connection with Chungcheongbukdo Province, Boeun, Eumseong, Goesan, Okchon and Yeongdong-gun County. It is meeting with public approval as an epochal project to have the same effect as cultivating oil on a field that can open a new high added value business of farming with local governments.
