Spur to solving the problem of food exhaustion as president of KPGR

It has not been long since domestically, potatoes came to receive attention as an alternative to solve the food shortage. Without the research of Prof. Lim Hak-tae, Kangwon National Univ., maybe it would have been dozens of years later when people will take interest in it, and food sources should have run out at that time. Struggling with potatoes for the past 22 years, Prof. Lim succeeded in developing functional color potatoes and high-yield potato varieties for the first time in the nation. After obtaining a Ph.D. degree with plant molecular genetics at Pennsylvania State University, USA, he took a professorship in Kangwon National University in 1991 when he started his researches on potatoes, he said. At that time, there was no very active research made on potato breeding, and most of potato varieties that have been grown in Korea were all foreign varieties. This field of study was so barren that an American variety called ¡®Superior¡¯ took up most Korean potato cultivation area. Since then, he said, he has devoted his 20 years of life to developing native potato varieties, leading to developing two dozen varieties in a series of ¡®Dr. Lim's Valley Potatoes,¡¯ a functional color potato containing natural antibiotics, antioxidant, antimicrobial effects, etc. This must have a value larger than just developing native variety, which is worthy enough in itself, because it can be an epoch-making measure for solving the problem of food exhaustion on the earth. For this purpose, Prof. Lim is spreading excellent native varieties of potato to each country of the world through the government accredited Korea Potato Genetic Resources Bank (Korea Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology). He signed a contract with Potandon Produce Inc., the largest potato marketing company in the US, for 5 varieties licensing in the North America, which was finally selected by the company after 7 years of test cultivation in many areas of USA. This has built up Lim¡¯s Valley Potatoes into a global potato brand, which is expected to unleash exports to Europe and each region of the world in the future. Regarding this, Prof. Lim says it is the opportunity to respect the first-dimensional value of relieving the problem of food resources through potatoes, which is recognized as the best local food, disclosing his will to spread the project of overcoming starvation by establishing an international organization like World Bank (provisionally titled the World Potato Food Foundation) in Korea.

Besides, he delivered his message that he wants a government-level support so that his Valley potatoes may penetrate into every region of the world as he has already done in many developing countries such as China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, North Korea, and Ethiopia. It takes some funds and manpower to incorporate the provisionally titled World Potato Food Foundation, which is being delayed in the country by lack of awareness of potatoes¡¯ values as a food. He emphasized, however, that we urgently need the attention and support from the government and many organizations as well as companies in order not to fall behind in the crops industry which is rapidly changing to a seeds war.


To impact the world¡¯s crops industry with two dozen Valley Potatoes and superior potato seed production technology

In Korea, not frontier country in potato industry, Prof. Lim Hak-tae¡¯s potato varieties and seed technologiesis constantly raising issues. It is probably because each country of the world facing food crisis is looking for their solutions by means of securing seeds related with food. Together with it, their attention is being drawn to Valley Potatoes in a total of two dozen varieties developed by Prof. Lim Hak-tae, which includes: has been developed for hypertension patients with a high flavor as well as diverse processing aptitudes for potato chips, French fries, potato starch, etc. containing many antioxidant activity substances has a good taste and beautiful rosy color in potato flowers. is an all-weather high-yield variety capable of growing even in a rice paddy and contains substances that strengthen the stomach and intestines. contains peptide, a natural antibiotic, with effects on preventing stomach and skin cancers. This Gogu valley is a sweet potato-shaped potato variety capable of eating raw and for juice. Especially, in case for which won the first (Gold Medal) prize in 2007 International Potato Expo, it has a high phenol compound (220%), vitamin C content (126%) and calorie (76%) compared to an ordinary potato varieties, which proves suitability for eating raw and processing into potato chip, etc. and excellence in treating obesity and stomach ulcer. 15 varieties of these potatoes developed by Prof. Lim are listed as the strict national potato listing while most potatoes of his have obtained or filed for patents for their biomedical and cosmetic functions. Echoing such achievements, LAP (Lambert Academic Publication), a world-known publisher in Germany, published in 2011 while Prof. Lim has also reaped an epochal result in the technological research of disease-free seed potatoes, including viruses. Also, Maccain, Lamweston, etc., the world¡¯s top-class potato processing companies are showing much interest in Valley Potato varieties for processing, while their production and quality trials is undergoing in the US, Canada, China, Russia, etc.


An answer key to solving the food problem in N.K. proposed by the support of Korea Research Foundation (KRF), Ministry of Education, Science and Technology

¡°It is almost impossible to make research on one kind of crop or topic for over 20 years at the university in Korea, which is always attempted to follow for research areas or topics concentrated on fund. Twenty years ago, however, I set my heart on producing functional color potatoes suited for the current wellbeing age. I have come all the way adhering to this resolution not stopping for a moment. Those efforts have paid off and I was able to develop the current Valley Potatoes, and in 1999 my color potato appeared on the KBS TV program receiving recognition as the originator in the fever of color fruits and vegetables.¡±

Setting his own propriety of the research, Prof. Lim Hak-tae poured out the results of his research activities which have continued for the past 20 years. Besides, all through his research, he proposed new solutions for food resources in accordance with the slogan ¡°Food is the moral rights for all of us.¡± put up by Dr. Norman Ernest Borlaug, a wheat-breeding scientist and Nobel Prize winner who Prof. Lim has made a model of.

For the past few years, he has been working on the collection and evaluation of potato genetic resources in relation to the world¡¯s food problem and development of excellent potato varieties for solution of the N.K.¡¯s food shortage by the support of the government (KRF, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology). He recently made an MOU with Dr. Joo, Pilju Kim, president of US-based ASI (Agglobe Services International) Foundation, who has been running several farms for 22 years for sustainable agriculture of the N.K. Since last year, ASI has been performing trials in North Korea with potato seeds provided by Prof. Lim , which proved better productivity than the locally growing potato varieties in the N.K. reaching the conclusion to increase the test cultivation areas on a larger scale this year. Besides, to review the adaptability to the N.K. area, he is carrying on the project of establishing the unification potato farm jointly with Yanggu-gun (county chief Jeon, Chang-beom) at Haean-myeon (also called punch ball) Yanggu-gun, which is similar to the N.K. in climate, producing the best seed potatoes for finally selected varieties suitable to the climatic conditons of North Korea and sending them to the North. He believes that this could play a very big role in relieving the food shortage of the N.K. because it is going to be an epochal alternative to fill the hunger of the North residents as a local food. Lastly, it is our hope that the world potato food foundation (WPFF) in his dream is set up soon.
