In 2003, Dr. Darbre at Univ. of Reading, UK, clarified that paraben ingredients can be responsible for breast cancer through his thesis on the connections between paraben and breast cancer. He actually presented data in which paraben was detected from tumor cells of 20 persons who had undergone mastectomy due to breast cancer. Then, the press at home and abroad raced to report the danger of chemical components, including paraben, in cosmetics. Of late, attention to natural cosmetics is rapidly increasing reflecting the distrust of consumers in the existing cosmetics. We met Shin Gyu-sik, a young CEO of ¡®Greymelin¡¯ which is paying off most prominently in the market of natural cosmetics.

When CEO Shin Gyu-sik, who had graduated from college majoring industrial design, joined a famed cosmetic company as designer, it was the start of his relation with cosmetics. While working as a designer, he went on mapping out his business plan accumulating knowledge on the whole business including the ingredients, manufacture, design, unit price, circulation, sales, etc. of cosmetics. After entering daringly into cosmetics business relying on his youth alone, however, CEO Shin suffered two times of failure in business. His first business in partnership with one of his acquaintances ended in failure because of vertical partnership. The somewhat older partner often processed things by himself making Shin with lack of business experience depend on him in many ways. Gradually, business was run regardless of CEO Shin¡¯s will and the company losing the right partnership was hard to maintain. On a second trial of business, he came to join up with someone who proposed investment, but this one came down hard or kept watch on CEO Shin refusing to wait until he could reach the break-even point. He said that he simply closed down the business after paying back all investment costs. It was the time when he bitterly realized how much it is hard to join another in business. Instead of giving up or being disappointed, however, CEO Shin went on with his ambition to make his own brand taking a lesson from his two?time failure in business. Then, he took note of natural material and spontaneously founded ¡®Graymelin,¡¯ a natural cosmetics company. On the principle of containing no alcohol, coloring matter, paraffin or chemical emulsifier, ¡®Graymelin¡¯ is releasing products that reduce skin irritation with the best natural components and maximize the effect one after another.

CEO Shin is one the youngest CEO¡¯s in the industry, about which he said that there is a larger merit than demerits of people failing to notice him as a president or to mister him. He indicated that his strength is being in a similar age group to his chief customer class because he can read their emotions correctly and catch their demands well. ¡°My management philosophy is one, putting staff welfare first, and two, the staff and customers should be on an equal relationship. Besides, I sort of attach more importance to human nature than to official qualifications.¡± Actually, the staff of Graymelin calls CEO Shin ¡°brother.¡± He also clarified his ambition about realizing the best staff welfare that can minimize work stress by building a staff cafeteria, lounge, fitness center, caf?, etc. and maximize job performances.


Vintage design in touch with the times

One of the elements that the existing natural cosmetics have failed to satisfy the buyers was their uncouthly humdrum designs. The time when customers agreed to select the uncouth design of a product so long as it has good components is over. CEO Shim himself had many worries about the expense used for containers. Using an expensive container pushes up the unit price of a product and caring about the unit price forces one to use a cheap material in a repeated vicious cycle. To keep to the principle of reducing the margin in the middle-step circulation or product production as far as possible and invest in the product components, CEO Shin decided to put his heart and soul to design while using an inexpensive container. ¡°Being familiar with the capability of our researchers who have been credited by famed cosmetic companies, I entrust everything about the product with them. All I have to do as CEO is present a direction to these specialists. The parts I am chiefly taking charge of in the company are the areas of design, product concept and direction. As product design is concerned, I never fail to participate from start to finish.¡± Trusting his own excellent feel for design, CEO Shin put out vintage, modern and exotic design of ¡®Graymelin¡¯ alone, which was answered by a heated response from the market. It is not too much to say that his design sensibility enhanced the status of a natural cosmetics market. Especially, the response from social commerce was so great that he was even awarded a plaque of thanks by the relevant social commerce.


Flood of exports with the tide of Hallyu

A recent rise in Hallyu (Korean wave) around the world has increased attention to Korea on a global scale with more tourists visiting Korea. Especially, main streets of Myeongdong frequented by tourists are competitively filled with cosmetic companies. Domestic customers find it difficult to get in the shops being pushed out by foreign ones and cheap and quality Korean cosmetics are selling like a hot cake. We are exporting to Thai, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan and Mongol with Russia ahead soon.¡± It is said that the person in charge of overseas expansion is a former executive in a large enterprise and he requested of his own accord to join the company looking ahead the possibility of ¡®Graymelin.¡¯ He is cutting a conspicuous figure in promoting ¡°Graymelin¡¯ in the whole world. Of late, CEO Shin is concentrating his efforts on making the premium line of ¡®If Only Brightening Milky Skin,¡¯ which is called an undying bestseller. This product is famous because it makes a pretty unpainted face with natural-tone correcting function, unlike BB cream which is hard to hide its camouflaging effect. However, while the existing product involves trouble wiping away after use, this premium line to be launched this time has been made into a functional product with no need to wipe away and with excellent whitening effect on wrinkles. Starting with foundation line, ¡®Graymelin¡¯ has put out cleansing line and bodyline and then perfume and natural fragrant grass on the market. Especially, perfume with a unique feeling drew a heated response from woman customers who had been looking for their own unique perfume. CEO Shin said that it is fatal to company management if some of products should fail in the market because the company is not a large enterprise which can compete with a gargantuan financial ability. That is why it is important to manufacture a product with characteristics of Graymelin¡¯s own that also reflects the trend well enough. It is the Graymelin¡¯s destiny and competitiveness not to make a product that will fail in the market in the first place. ¡°My aim is to build our own shop at Gangnam station and Myeongdong. It is not just an ordinary cosmetics shop but a shop with community activated enough to have a tea in a seated position. Above all, I¡¯d like to establish myself firmly in the domestic market. Foreign exports come along next as a necessity.¡± It seems safe to expect the wonderful move of CEO Shin Gyu-sik who is arousing a fresh echo in the natural cosmetics circles with the best-picked material and polished design.
