Brain-Machine Interface that will change our lives
Prof. Jaeho is one of the world's top authorities in Brain-Machine Interface (BMI). He became a professor of Korea University in 2011 and has carried out R&D in neurophotonics & interface, optics-based retina & brain imaging device, optical bio engineering & optic sensor and signal/imaging process algorithm.
BMI is the core element of the next generation ubiquitous technology and is regarded as an original technology for various industries including U-health care that requires bio-signal measures and analysis. Prof. Han said "BMI is a program that realizes our thoughts in action. It can enable us to develop artificial arms and legs as well as virtual entertainment contents."
BMI can be applied to medicine, rehabilitation, health care, IT devices, bicycles and cars. It can also be used a touch screen technology and next generation interface and for this reason, many countries are pouring huge amount of money in the field. Han currently is carrying out a research on unprecedented 'Photo Acoustic Brain-Machine Interface Technology' supported by MSIP (the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning). Han is to establish the characteristics of photoacoustic reaction that are appeared on brain and other tissues and the sensory response caused by external stimulus so that he can see the possibility of using Bran-Machine Interface. He continued "The US and Germany are the leading countries in the field but Korea is second to none in terms of its technology. I'm confident to say that we can lead the Brain-Machine Interface field in the near future."

Turning the impossible to possible
Korea University's Brain Engineering Department opened its door in 2009 with the goal to be the world's top 10 in the brain engineering field. The department has held numerous international invitation lectures on a yearly basis and carried out co-research with overseas professors. Also, the department introduced cutting edge research equipments such as fMRI, EEG and NIRS and has built the best research system and curriculum by connecting the related departments and organizations in the world. Prof. Han emphasized that brain engineering was the most important field that can overcome various physical difficulties of the body. He said "Brain engineering studies on the potential of our brain and dynamism of the body. People with physical disabilities will benefit from the development of the field."
Han is also working as the head of Brain Recognition Fusion Science Department. His research papers were published on a renowned mechanical engineering magazine 'IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics'. In addition, Han's two talented pupils have published their papers on top international academic journals. Currently, Prof. Han is working on interface that can control the movement of a mouse. The initial research result has already been published on IEEE EMBS Neural Engineering Conference and more substantial results are expected from the industry officials.
Prof. Han said "Research is the process to make the impossible to possible. The idea and the value of the researcher therefore play a vital role. It means that the researcher's trustworthiness, honesty and humanity is a must to contribute to raising the quality of our lives."
