좋은 쌀 제공으로 농가와 소비자의 오작교 역할

제임스 알렌이 쓴 불후의 명작 ‘AS A MAN THINKETH’ 중에 ‘몸은 마음의 종’이라는 표현이 있다. 결국 인간의 몸은 마음이 시키는 대로 움직인다는 뜻이다. 모든 인생사가 마음먹기에 따라 달라진다는 뜻으로도 해석된다. 내가 재벌이어도 마음이 돈으로만 향하면 더 많이 벌어야 한다는 욕심에 따라 움직이고, 한낱 월급쟁이도 봉사와 기부하는 마음이 크다면 끊임없이 남을 도우며 살아갈 것이다. 그렇게 몸은 마음이 시키는 대로 따라간다. “기부는 은근히 중독성이 있다”는 ㈜효승유통 최정임 대표 또한 많아서 나누는 것이 아니라 마음이 시키는 나눔을 실천하고 있다. 그는 “주변에도 나와 내 이웃의 손길이 필요한 그늘진 곳이 너무나 많다”며 열심히 일 해서 번 돈을 지역민과 나누어, 작으나마 그들에게 희망이 되고 싶다고 했다.
농협을 통한 직거래로 가격거품 제거
이렇듯 지역사회에서 나눔의 홀씨를 전파하고 있는 효승유통 최정임 대표, 내년이면 사업을 시작한 지 20년이 되는 여성 CEO이다. 오프라인 쌀 전문점으로 시작해 2010년 온라인으로까지 영역을 확대했을 뿐 아니라 명예퇴직자들에게 무점포창업을 지원하는 등 효승유통의 성장과 함께 많은 사람들이 혜택을 볼 수 있게 되었다.
최 대표는 “우리 효승유통은 먹거리, 그 중에서도 주식인 쌀을 취급하는 만큼 정직과 신뢰가 필수 요소다. 그래서 ‘효승’이라는 브랜드도 아들과 딸 이름의 첫 글자를 조합한 것이다. 내 자녀들이 먹는 쌀이라면, 당연히 가장 좋은 제품의 쌀을 저렴하게 구입하고 싶을 것이다”라며 “농협 등을 통해 직거래함으로써 가격의 거품을 빼고 당일 도정한 최상의 품질을 제공하고 있다”고 말했다.
가끔씩 나 자신도 느슨해지거나 자본의 유혹 앞에 흔들릴 때도 있다고 했다. 그럴 때면 으레 ‘아차, 나는 효승유통 사장이었지. 우리 아들딸의 이름을 걸었지’라는 생각으로 다시 배고픈 이웃을 위해 일하게 된다.
농가를 위한 정부의 현실적인 지원책 절실
통계청의 조사에 의하면, 우리나라 국민 1인당 쌀 소비량은 지난 2002년 87kg이었는데 10년이 지난 2012년에는 69.8kg으로 크게 감소했다. 간편화되고 서구화된 식습관 때문이다. 이러한 시절을 함께 겪어내고 있는 최 대표가 체감하는 경기 또한 통계치와 다르지 않다.
그럼에도 불구하고 그는 좋은 쌀을 더 저렴하게 더 많이 공급하기 위해 노력하고 있다.
그는 “우리가 이익을 적게 보더라도 좋은 쌀을 많이 소비하는 것이 중요하다. 땀 흘려 농사 지은 농민들에게는 더 많은 이익을 주고, 밥보다 빵을 선호하는 소비자들에게는 맛있는 쌀밥의 진수를 느끼게 해주는 가교역할을 하고 싶다”라며 “새 정부 들어 농축산물 유통경로를 줄이자는 방안이 나오고 있는데, 나도 여기에 공감한다. 물류와 유통 단계를 축소한다면 틀림없이 농가와 소비자가 함께 만족할 수 있는 접점이 생길 것”이라고 강조했다.
2015년부터 한미FTA에 따른 관세자유화가 진행되는데, 아직 우리 농가는 이를 받아들일 준비가 되지 않았다. 자생력과 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있는 충분한 시간을 주었어야 하는데, 그러지 못했다. 하지만 이미 벌어진 일이라면 후회가 아니라 해결방법이 필요하다. 최 대표는 앞서 말한 유통경로를 줄여 농가 이윤을 최대화시키는 등의 현실적인 지원이 절실함을 피력했다.
나눌수록 채워지는 ‘기분좋은 쌀가게’
우리나라는 여성이 사업을 하기에 그리 녹록한 환경이 아니다. 그나마 지금은 많이 좋아졌지만 최 대표가 처음 사업할 당시만 해도 여성CEO에 대한 편견이 많던 시절이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 강산이 두 번 변하는 동안 효승유통이 지속적인 성장을 이뤄온 데는 그럴만한 몇 가지 이유가 있다. 최 대표는 그 중에서도 으뜸이 바로 남편의 외조라고 했다. 사업초기 구상에서부터 20여년이 지난 오늘에 이르기까지 가장 큰 힘이 되어주었다. 더불어 우리 기업의 이윤보다 농가와 소비자를 먼저 생각하는 최 대표의 마인드가 주효했다. 그래서 효승유통의 시작과 끝은 모두 정직과 신용으로 통한다. 소비자의 신뢰를 얻으면 기업의 영속성은 저절로 따라오지만, 한 번 잃어버린 신뢰는 평생 회복하기 힘들기 때문에, 이곳의 제1원칙도, 제2원칙도 신뢰를 지키는 것이다.

Urgent Need for Realistic Support Policy for Farm Households
According to the latest surveys of National Statistics Office, Per capita consumption of rice per year in Korea have greatly declined from 87kg in 2002 to 69.8kg ten years later in 2012. "It is important to consume that rice in spite of our reaping the small benefits.
