중소기업 육성은 새정부가 강조한 창조경제의 핵심전략 중 하나이다. 박근혜 대통령은 열심히 노력하면 누구나 일어설 수 있도록 중소기업 육성정책을 펼쳐 대기업과 중소기업이 상생할 수 있도록 하는 게 자신이 추구하는 경제의 중요한 목표라고 했다. 중소기업이 살아야 창조경제가 꽃을 피우고, 경제부흥도 이룰 수 있다는 것이다. 과연 정부의 시책은 얼마나 중소기업들에게 힘이 되어 줄 수 있을지 세계 최고의 플라즈마 전원장치 기술로 강소 수출기업으로의 꿈을 실현중인 정연실 대표를 만나 이야기를 들어봤다.
신제품 75kW급 마이크로 웨이브 시스템
정연실 대표는 경북 봉화 출신으로 두메산골에서 문화적 혜택은 많이 받지 못했지만 자연적 혜택은 풍부히 받으며 성장했다. 이후 부천으로 이사해 공고를 졸업한 그는 산업체에서 일하며 어렵게 대학교 공부를 마친다. 대학교 등록금을 마련하기 위해 다양한 아르바이트를 하며 견문을 넓혔던 그는 졸업 후 'VHDL 직장인 대상 무료강좌'를 통해 반도체 회로 설계를 공부하며 실력을 쌓은 후 관련 분야에서 고른 이력을 쌓게 된다. 그러다 2004년 결혼을 하고 한 아이의 아빠가 되면서 더 늦기 전에 창업을 해야 한다고 결심하고, 비손테크를 설립하게 이른다. 정연실 대표는 “남보다 잘 먹고, 잘 입고, 잘 잘 생각만 하지 않는다면 무슨 일이라도 할 수 있다”는 그 초심을 잊지 않으며 지난 10년 동안 비손테크를 성장시켜왔다.
작지만 강한 수출기업으로 성장하고 있는 비손테크는 세계최고의 플라즈마 발생 전원장치 분야의 기술을 보유하고 있다. 지난해 비손테크는 미국 리차드슨이 독점해 온 30kW이상급 마이크로웨이브 시스템을 국산화하며 미국의 선진기업들이 아직 내놓지 못한 대용량 제품을 개발하는데 주력해 왔다. 최근에는 75kW급 대용량 마이크로웨이브 시스템을 시장에 선보이며 다시 한 번 이목을 집중시켰다. 이 제품을 이용한 산업용 건조기는 음식물이나 필름, 건자재 등을 건조하는 용도로 사용된다. 또 환경 분야에서는 마이크로파를 이용한 고효율 열풍장치로 만들어 반도체 제조공정에 쓰이는 불산을 비롯한 유해가스를 제거하는 리액터 장치로 공급할 계획이다. 비손테크는 더 나아가 마이크로웨이브 온수기와 건조기 등 대중성 있는 소형제품도 개발하여 틈새시장도 공략할 예정이다. 정연실 대표는 “비손테크는 RF기술과 마이크로웨이브 관련 원천 기술 특허를 다수 보유해 이를 응용분야가 많다”며 “비손테크만의 신뢰할 수 있는 기술력으로 장치만 파는 게 아니라 응용분야 개발로 시스템 전반을 수출할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.
기업의 성공은 사회로 흘려야 한다
정연실 대표의 회사운영 방침은 ‘세계적으로 경쟁력 있는 우수 제품을 만들어 내자’다. 중소기업은 대기업과 달리 자금력이나 홍보력에 기댈 수 없기 때문에 오직 기술력만으로 세계무대에서 승부를 낼 수 있다는 것이 그의 설명이다. 그는 비손테크의 성공 요인으로 첫 번째 스피드, 두 번째는 아이디어. 세 번째는 1인 다역 소화하기를 꼽았다. 그는 비손테크가 아직은 대기업 수준의 환경을 갖추지 못했고 인프라도 빈약하지만 현 상황에서 가장 좋은 아이디어를 찾기만 하면 진행속도가 굉장히 빠른 강점이 있다고 했다. 그가 자부하는 비손테크만의 놀라운 스피드는 제품 개발 시간을 현격히 줄여줄고, 남들이 1대 만들 때 10대 만들어 비교 분석할 수 있는 수준이다. 남들이 10년 걸리면 1년 안에 성과를 낼 수 있다는 것이 그의 설명이며 그것이 실현가능한 이유는 매일 밤을 새면서도 지치지 않는 모든 직원들의 하나 된 열정이라고 덧붙였다. 좋은 아이디어로 스피드를 끌어올리고, 1인 다역을 소화하면서 예상 비용을 최소화해 온 그의 노력이 오늘날의 비손테크를 만들었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 정연실 대표는 비손테크의 지난 성장을 자신이 경영 수업을 받았던 10년으로 정의했다. 그는 사람, 돈, 기술, 경영과 관련된 모든 기업의 문제 99%로는 대표의 자질문제임을 부정할 수 없다 했다. 지난 10년을 돌아보면 적극적인 개발비 투자로 매출규모는 생각보다 크지 않았지만, 세계수준의 제품을 국산화 시키며 훌륭한 포토폴리오를 만든 준비의 과정이었다. 지난해 매출 11억에 이어 올해 매출 50억을 예상하는 그는 이제부터가 결실의 시즌이 될 것이라 예상했다. “김연아 선수가 복귀무대에서 우승하여 태극기를 든 모습을 보며 큰 감동을 얻었습니다. 각자가 자신이 맡은 자리에서 세계 최고가 되겠다는 장인정인을 발휘하면 자신의 성공과 더불어 나라를 빛낼 수도 있습니다.” 비손테크의 비손은 ‘풍부하게 흐르는 강’이라는 뜻으로 성경에 나오는 에덴동산의 위치한 4대강 중 가장 풍요로운 1번째 강의 이름에서 가져왔다. 그는 자신이 경영을 통해 산에 나무를 심으면 그 나무는 큰 강을 만들고 그 강은 어딘가로 흐를 것이라 했다. 즉, 한 기업으로써의 성공이 돈이라면 그 돈이 회사 내부에서 풍부하게 사회로 흘려가야 한다는 것이다. 그는 비손테크의 이름에 걸맞게 성공한 기업의 리더로서 사회기여도 게을리 하지 않겠다는 당찬 포부를 밝혔다.
새정부의 중소기업 육성정책에 대한 기대
정연실 대표는 우리나라 중소기업의 세계 시장과의 기술 수준 격차는 극복가능한 선이라 했다. 문제는 기술력이 아니라 자본력인 것이다. 중소기업의 대한 정부의 적극적인 관심이 필요한 이때 정부가 내놓은 중소기업 육성정책은 얼마나 효과적일까? 정연실 대표는 경영을 하다보면 중소기업 관련 시책이 정말 중소기업을 위함인가 의문이 들 때가 많다고 했다. 중소기업의 눈높이와 입장을 전혀 고려하지 않고, 결과적으로 정부나 대기업을 위한 규정들을 만들고 있다는 인상을 지울 수 없기 때문이다. 중소기업이 세계적으로도 경쟁력 있는 제품을 만들어내고는 있지만 정부의 지원은 늘 아쉽다. 그는 “정부에서 때가 되어도 꽃을 못 피우는 업체를 발굴하여 반드시 꽃을 피워줬으면 좋겠다.”며 정부의 적극적인 지원과 꾸준한 관심을 강조했다. 또 그는 안으로는 중소기업간의 협력이 미비한 것도 문제라고 밝혔다. 그는 핵심기술을 갖춘 기업과 기업간의 협력이 이루어진다면 뜻밖의 시너지 효과를 불러올 것이라 추측했다. 그러기 위해서는 리더역활을 자처하는 곳이 필요한데 경영이 어렵다 보니 현실화 되지 않는 것이 문제라고도 했다. 새 정부의 ‘코스넷’에 기대를 걸고 있다는 정연실 대표는 인도, 중국, 몽골 등 군소발전소 건설 수요가 많은 지역으로 수출을 확대할 예정이며 사세 확장 계획도 세웠다. 비손테크는 코스닥에 상장할 계획이며, 플라즈마 기술을 바탕으로 한 세계적 수준의 제품들을 선보일 예정이다.

CEO Jeong Yeon-Sil was born in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbukdo but he didn’t see many advanced cultural things when a kid, instead of being around the nature. Afterwards, he moved to Bucheon City and graduated from a technical high school. Later, he got a job in the industry work but he studied hard at the same time. Finally, he finished the university while working there. On the other hand, he had to work as many as he could to put the school money. After graduation from the university, he took a VHDL free lesson for workers and studied for that more in depth. He gradually built up his skill on semi-conductor circuit with training himself and got his career in that field exemplary. Meanwhile, he married in 2004 and became a father of one child. Then, he thought he had to start his own business. This is how ‘Pishon Tech’ established. CEO Jeong Yeon-Sil has grown up his company for last 10 years and tried not to forget the first mind in the beginning, which was ‘If we don’t think about eating better, wearing better and sleeping more, we can do anything”.
Small but ‘Pishon Tech’ is strongly stable enough to export their products. Especially, this company has the world best technique for plasma power supply device. Last year, ‘Pishon Tech’ manufactured products that are over 30kW power level, which was monopolistically provided by Richardson Inc. They were focusing on bulk items that American big companies had not shown on the market. Recently, the company got a big attention because of a bulk item like 75kW level microwave system from authorities. Industrial dryers that use that product could be used to dry food, film and dry materials in bulk. Furthermore, they are developing small items like microwave water heater or dryer that might be more popular to people in order to target the niche market as well. CEO Jeong Yeon-Sil said, “‘Pishon Tech’ has RF technique and many original technology patents related to microwave, we have lots of areas to apply. Besides, we are not only selling the products with our integrity but also planning to export the whole system with application development.”
Success has to flow down to the society
CEO Jeong Yeon-Sil’s business philosophy is to make something great to compete with the world. As for the small companies, they cannot spend the money on sponsoring or promotion, so they are only looking for the best technique to be successful, according to him. He mentioned about the secret of the success and there are 3 factors. The first is speed, the second is idea and the last is playing the multiple roles. He is proud of the company’s speed. Thanks to that, they could save lots of time to develop the items. After all, they could produce 10 when others make 1. He explained they could make it happen within one year when other companies could finish that within 10 years and the reason why they are sure about this is all the workers are so passionate even though they work overnight. Good idea can make that speed up and taking the multiple roles can save the expected expenses to the minimum. So, probably, all these were working for one another and this is how ‘Pishon Tech’ became a successful company in the industry.
Looking back the last 10 years, the profit was not a great deal since the company invested plenty of money on development costs but it was all about making them look nice. Consequently, because of the investment, they made it happen like letting them manufacture in Korea, so their last year’s profit reached at 1.1 billion but this year, they expect the profit 5 billion. By that, he said from now on, it will be the season of fruit. “When I saw Kim Yeon-Ah’s comeback successful and holding Korea’s flag after the victory, I was very touched. If we have an eager of being the best in the world on our position, the success will follow and even we can even bring great honor to our country. He promised to contribute to the society as a successful leader with befitting to their name.
Expect from the government’s new promotion policy
CEO Jeong Yeon-Sil said the gab between Korea’s small companies and other countries’ companies can get over. The matter is not a technique but capital. Then, how effective Korea’s new government policy for the small businesses is? He confessed that he used to doubt the policy for the small companies by the government when he has been running the business. He couldn’t feel it is for them, but rather he felt it was for the big companies or the government. The small companies are making many amazing products that can surprise the world, but the support from the government is always feeling sorry. He urged the government to active support and steady attention more than now with saying that the government has to discover hidden strong small companies that cannot find the way to bloom to the business. He thinks that if a company with an essential technique works with another company, it will bring out the good result in the end. Other than that, he expects KOSNET launched by this new government and he will plan to export many countries that demand minor power plants like India, China or Mongol. ‘Pishon Tech’ is also supposed to go public with KOSDAQ and supposed to show their world-class items based on the plasma technique.
