도전과 열정으로 전통문화예술 대중화에 앞장 설 것!

“전통 예술은 국가의 상징입니다”

예부터 전해내려 오는 전통문화예술은 국가의 상징적인 의미를 담고 있다. 하지만 최근 외국 문화의 유입으로 인해 점점 그 힘을 잃어가고 있는 것이 안타까운 현실입니다. 국가의 상징인 전통문화예술. 우리는 전통문화예술의 소중함과 신비함을 깨닫고 대중적인 관심을 보여야한다. 이처럼 대중들의 관심 속에서 멀어지고 있는 현 시점에서 전통예술 대중화와 혼을 알리는데 힘을 쏟고 있는 이가 있어 화제를 일으키고 있다. 바로 국가중요무형문화재 57호(경기민요), 92호 태평무 이수자인 한국예술대학 이우호 교수이다. 늦깎이의 나이로 전통예술에 뛰어들었지만 그의 노래와 춤사위는 대한민국을 사로잡기 충분했다.

우연한 만남으로 시작된 전통예술, 그것은 필연이었다

이우호 교수는 어릴 적부터 전통 예술을 전공한 전공자는 아니었다. 사회생활을 겪으며 우연한 계기로 시작하게 되었다. 사업을 하며 승승장구 했지만 곧 시련이 찾아왔고 그 시련 속에 민요를 만나게 된다. 회심곡과 한오백년. 이 민요는 이우호 교수를 전통예술의 길로 인도했고 그는 38세의 늦깎이 나이에 한국 전통 예술에 푹 빠지게 된다. 그는 어느덧 20여년 가까이 춤과 노래로 일생을 보내고 있고, 이제는 하루도 춤추지 않고 소리를 하지 않으면 몸살처럼 드러누워야 할 지경이라며 예술에 대한 애정을 표현했다. 현재 중요무형문화재 제57호 경기민요와 중요무형문화제 제92호 태평무 이수자로써 한국 전통 민요와 한국 전통 춤 두 가지를 아우르는 특별한 이력을 소유하고 있다. 전공자도 아니고 길지 않은 시간이었지만 이 교수가 지금의 단계에 올라올 수 있었던 것은 바로 열정과 끈기를 갖고 있었기 때문이다. 이 교수는 “어떤 일이든 시작을 하면 최고가 되기보다는 열심히 최선을 다해 노력하는 사람이고 항상 자신을 위해서 준비를 해 두는 사람이라고 말하고, 그래서 늦은 나이에 시작은 했지만 남들 보다 많은 연습을 했고, 연습으로 흘린 그 땀들이 지금의 저를 만들고 있고 미래의 저 자신을 바라볼 수 있는 긴 안목이 생긴다”라고 회상했다.

경기민요는 우리 전통 민요 중에서도 맑고 경쾌하며 느린 굿거리장단과 빠른 자진모리, 세마치장단 등이 쓰이며 신명 나는 진행으로 타 민요들과 차별화가 된다. 서도민요나 남도민요에 비해 맑고 깨끗하며 음색이 서정적이고 부드러운 것이 특징이라 할 수 있고, 태평무는 장단이 복잡해서 가락을 알지 못하면 춤을 만들 수도 출 수도 없는 우리의 전통 춤이다. 특히 가장 기교적인 춤 사위가 발 디딤(춤)으로 알려져 있으며 나라의 태평성대를 기원하는 무용으로 전해지고 있다. 이처럼 가장 전통적인 예술을 보유하고 있는 이우호 교수는 경기민요는 김뻐국 선생과 이춘희, 남궁 랑 선생에게 사사 받았으며, 태평무는 강선영,이명자 선생 살풀이춤은 이매방, 임이조 선생 등 한국을 대표하는 예술가들에게 전수를 받았다. 그렇기 때문에 그의 노래와 춤사위는 관객을 들뜨게 하는 힘과 정열이 있는 것이다.

국내 최고의 전통예술가 ‘이우호’

이우호 교수는 대한민국의 대표적인 상을 휩쓸고 있는 장본인이다. 국회의장상, 국무총리상 등 이미 많은 상을 받은 이 교수는 무용으로는 이미 전국국악대제전에서 대통령상을 수상하며 최고의 자리에 올랐다. 이제 남은 것은 민요로 대통령상을 수상하는 것이다.

그는 우리전통예술은 ‘힐링’이라고 소개한다. 몸과 정신을 맑고 바르게 해주며 스트레스 해소에도 그만이라 남녀노소 누구나 쉽게 즐길 수 있는 문화이기 때문이다. 이 교수는 “현대인들이 배우기에 안성맞춤”이라며 “우리의 전통은 편안함 그 자체”라고 설명했다.

이 교수는 특히 국악의 대중화를 위해 힘쓰고 있다. 대중들에게는 국악을 알리고 홍보할 수 있는 기회의 장을 마련하고 후학들에게는 전통국악시스템과 국악교실을 통해 고유의 것을 알리고 있다. 또한 결혼이주민들과 다문화 가정들이 한국의 문화를 보고 배울 수 있는 공연프로그램을 준비 중에 있다.

관객의 열정이 느껴지는 무대에 설 때가 많은 긴장도 되지만 가장 행복하다는 이우호 교수는 현재 중앙대학교 국악교육대학원, 한국국악예술원, 한국예술대학, 명지대 사회교육원, (사)한국전통민요협회예술단장 (사)한국전통춤연구회이사 등에서 활동하며 대중들에게 한국 전통예술의 우수성을 강조하고 있다.

언제나 가장 한국적인 것을 알리기 위해 정진하고 있는 이우호 교수. 후학양성과 전통 예술에 대한 순정으로 한국의 진정한 가무를 즐길 줄 아는 그가 있어 세계가 곧, 대한민국의 전통문화예술에 매력에 빠질 날이 머지않았음을 느껴본다.

To take lead in popularization of traditional culture

and arts with challenge and passion

Traditional culture and arts handed down from the ancient times is a symbol of our country. It is regrettable, however, that this thing of our own is gradually losing its power due to the recent introduction of foreign cultures. We should be aware of the preciousness and mystery of our traditional culture and arts showing popular concern. Currently, though it is getting farther from the people’s interest, there is still one who is throwing his heart and soul in seeking to popularize traditional arts and promote its souls. Though he entered into traditional arts as a late bloomer, Prof. Lee Woo-ho, Korea National Univ. of Arts, showed such wonderful singing and dancing movement that it finally captivated this country. He is a certified successor of Gyeonggi folk songs (Important intangible cultural asset #57) and Taepyeong dance (#92).

Traditional arts starting by encounter but proving to be a necessity for him

Prof. Lee Woo-ho was not a major in traditional arts since childhood but he came to enter into it by accident during his career in society. After he won victory after victory in business he came upon an ordeal, in which he came across traditional folk songs. It was the song of ‘Five hundred years’ that led Prof. Lee Woo-ho onto the path of traditional arts and he became infatuated with Korean traditional arts at his rather old age of 38. Since then, he has been spending his life with dancing and singing for well over a dozen years. He expressed his love of arts by saying that he couldn’t spend a single day without dancing and singing without aching all over. Currently, he has a special career in both kinds of Korean traditional folk songs and dances as a certified successor of Gyeonggi folk songs (Important intangible cultural asset #57) and Taepyeong dance (#92). He was neither a major in the field nor has it been a long time enough, but Prof. Lee has been able to rise to the present position because of his passion and adhesiveness. Prof. Lee recollected, “Once I have started in anything, I don’t want to be the on the top position but instead I make endeavors giving my best always preparing myself for the future. That’s why as I started later on in life, I put in more hours for practice than others, and the sweats I shed are making what I am providing a long perspective to look at myself in the future.”

Of our traditional folk songs, Gyeonggi folk songs are clear and nimble using a slow Gutgeori, fast Jajinmori, and Semachi beats differentiating itself from other folk songs with a lighthearted progress. Its characteristics are being purer and cleaner than Seodo or Namdo folk songs with a lyric and soft tone color. Taepyeong dance is our traditional dance with such a complex beat that no one would be able to make or perform it without knowing its tune. Especially, the most technical dance movement is known as footing (dance), which is a dance for praying for the country’s peaceful reign. Prof. Lee Woo-ho, possessed of the most traditional arts like this, was taught Gyeonggi folk songs by masters Kim Bbeokuk, Lee Choon-hee and Namgung rang, Taepyeong dance by Kang Seon-yeong and Lee Myeong-ja, Salpuri dance by Lee mae-bang and Lim I-jo, all of them were the artists who represented Korea. Probably that is why his singing and danccing movement have power and passion enough to excite the spectators.

‘Lee Woo-ho,’ the top traditional artist in the nation

Prof. Lee Woo-ho is the hero who is sweeping away the prizes representing Korea. Prof. Lee who has won so many prizes including the Speaker’s and the Premier’s has already won the presidential award in the Korean Classical Music Grand Festival for dancing, rising to the top position. What remains now is to win the presidential award for a folk song.

He introduces our traditional arts as ‘healing’ because it cleans and straightens our body and mind so much with excellent effect of relieving stress that people of all ages and both sexes can enjoy this culture easily. Prof. Lee explained, “It is well-suited for modern people to learn and you will find that our tradition gives us comfort itself.”

Especially, Prof. Lee is making endeavors to popularize Korean classical music. While providing the people with an opportunity to know and publicize our classical music, he is also acquainting his juniors with our own thing through traditional classical music system and its classroom. He is also preparing a performance program for migrants by marriage and multicultural families to see and learn Korean culture.

Prof. Lee Woo-ho, who says being happiest when standing on a stage where he can feel the spectators’ passion, is currently acting at Chung-ang Univ Graduate school of Korean Classical Music Education, Korea National Univ. of Arts, Korean Classical Music Art Academy, Myongji Univ. Institute of Continuing Education, Korean Traditional Folk Song Association Art Troupe director, Korean Traditional Dance Research director, etc. emphasizing the excellence of Korean traditional arts.

With presence of Prof. Lee Woo-ho, who is always devoted to publicizing the most Korean thing knowing the true singing and dancing of Korea with passion for rearing his juniors and traditional arts, we feel that it will not be long before the entire world is fascinated by Korean traditional culture and arts.
