바다 위의 눈꽃으로 불리며 자연의 위대함 없이는 탄생할 수 없는 그것, 바로 ‘천일염’이다.이러한 천일염 중에서도 도기타일 염전이라는 친환경염전의 명맥을 이어가고 있는 주원염전을 찾기 위해 신안군에서 뱃길로 2시간 떨어진 다도해 해상국립공원에 위치한 비금도를 찾았다. 시간이 멈춘 듯한 비금도는 작은 나라 그 안에서 너무도 작은 섬이다. 하지만 주원염전이 천일염을 이용한 다양한 시도들을 하고 있어 점점 주목받는 섬으로 거듭나고 있다. 이곳에서 탄생한 천일염의 가치는 돈으로 가늠하기 어렵다. 자연이 만들어내는 시간의 가치, 장인정신이 빚어내는 인고의 가치, 이는 선대로부터 물려받은 위대한 유산이자 후손 대대로 물려주어야 할 우리 민족의 또 다른 경쟁력이다.

친환경 도기타일공법으로 만들어진 명품 천일염

“이 작은 섬에서 아버지는 평생 염부들과 희로애락을 함께 하셨습니다. 아버지에게 염전은 삶 자체였고, 좋은 소금에 대한 열정만으로 살아온 인생이었습니다.”

그러한 아버지의 소금사랑을 계승하고 있는 주원염전 곽민선 대표는 아버지가 물려주신 위대한 유산을 세계 속에 알리고자 노력하고 있다. 천혜의 자연염전을 간직한 비금도의 소금에 현대 과학적 지식을 더해서 국민들에게 천일염의 우수함을 알리고 있는 것이다. 이렇듯 그의 모든 생각과 생활은 소금에서 시작하고 소금으로 돌아간다.

주원염전이 생산하는 천일염의 가치는 무한대다. 특히 ISO22000, ISO14001의 국제인증을 받는 염전에서 친환경 도기타일 장인정신으로 생산되는 최상품의 여름소금, 이 천일염의 효과는 상상을 초월한다. 세계적으로 보존해야할 가치가 큰 유물인 동시에 태양, 바다, 바람 그리고 자연적 시간의 산물이기 때문에 더욱 귀중한 보물이다.

하지만 처음부터 천일염이 환영받았던 것은 아니다. 천일염에 대한 인식조차 정립되지 않았었고, 1997년은 정부정책으로 염전의 폐전이 실시되었다. 이런 인고의 과정을 거치면서도 선친인 곽준식 대표는 천일염에 대한 열정을 놓지 않았고, 무엇이든 간절히 소망하고 노력하면 이루어진다는 진리를 보여주듯 최근 몇 년 사이 천일염에 대한 사람들의 인식이 급변하고 있다. 소금이 우리 건강에 미치는 영향력이 얼마나 큰지 입증되면서 천일염의 우수성에 대한 집중도가 더욱 높아진 것이다.

곽민선 대표는 소금에 대한 주제가 오르내릴 때마다 아버지가 너무도 그립다고 한다. 그는 “비록 지금은 안계시지만 그래도 아버지에게 효도할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 좋은 소금으로 많은 사람들의 건강을 지키는 것밖에 없다”고 했다. 곽 대표는 아버지의 희망을 지키기 위해 정직한 천일염을 만들어 식탁의 보물로 자리잡게 하고, 소금으로 얻어지는 이윤을 국제기아대책기구를 통해 아프리카, 남미 어린이 등을 후원하고 소외된 이웃과 함께 나누고 있다. 그가 물려받는 유산은 천일염뿐이 아니었다. 세계인의 삶을 풍요롭게 하라는 진정성도 함께 물려받은 것이다.

주원염전의 비전이 곧 비금도의 꿈과 희망이다

주원염전의 천일염이 남다를 수밖에 없는 이유는 바로 국내 최초 ‘친환경 도기타일공법’을 도입한 것이 주효했다. 이는 투자 유지비가 일반 장판염전에 비해 5배 이상이 소요되고 생산량은 2/3에도 못 미친다. 하지만 이 공법을 유지하는 것은 미네랄과 무기질이 풍부하고 염도 낮은 최고의 천일염을 생산하고자 하는 주원염전만의 오랜 고집이다.

고려대학교 생명환경과학대학원에서 소금산업에 관한 논문(우리나라 소금산업의 특성과 발전방안에 관한 연구)을 발표하기도 한 곽 대표는, 선친의 뜻을 이어받아 천일염의 저변확대와 연구개발에 매진해 ‘행복한 식탁을 만드는 소금’을 공급할 것이라고 강조했다.

주원염전에서는 이 외에도 천일염을 활용한 다양한 제품개발로 주목받고 있다. 특히 이미용제품 중에서도 솔트클리닉치약은 천일염에 들어있는 천연 미네랄이 잇몸 건강과 치조골을 튼튼히 유지해주는 작용을 해, 치주가 상하고 출혈이 생기거나 염증이 생겨 치아가 흔들리는 현상을 예방할 수 있다. 또한, 방부제와 사카린, 계면활성제를 사용하지 않기 때문에 일반 치약에 비해 거품은 덜 나지만 입안에 이물감이 남지 않아 한 번 사용한 고객들을 중심으로 문의가 쇄도하고 있다.

또 하나의 주력 제품은 천일염을 주원료로 한 솔트 바디워시 제품이다. 곽민선 대표는 “가는 소금은 쉽게 물러져 워시 제품으로 사용이 불가능했고 일반 천일염은 입자가 크고 모나서 피부에 자극을 줄 수 있기 때문에 입자를 곱게 갈아서 만들어야 했다. 또 여기에 유황성분을 첨가해 피부 면역력과 스트레스 완화 효과를 높였다”라며 바디위시 제품을 개발하는 과정이 그리 녹록치 않았음을 회상했다. 이렇게 개발된 바다위시 제품은 천연 미네랄 성분으로 가득해 촉촉하고 매끄러운 피부를 오랫동안 유지하는 효과를 발휘했다.

이 외에도 함초 제품과 기능성 소금제품, 입욕제품인 바쓰솔트, 비금도 시금치인 섬초와 천일염을 함유한 솔트 수제비누 등 다양한 솔트테라피 상품들을 선보임으로써 소금산업의 활성화에 일익을 담당하고 있다.

그 결과 곽 대표는 2013 ‘제25회 대한민국 지식경영인 대상’ 수상, 2013년 대한민국 신지식인 선정, 2013 대한민국 대표 지역특산품 지정뿐 아니라 2013년 9월 국내 최초로 천일염 생활과학연구소를 개소해 천일염을 개발하고 우수성을 알리는데 주력하고 있다.

곽 대표는 “비금도는 아직 많이 알려지지 않았지만 세계적으로도 보기 힘든 천혜의 자연을 가진 섬이다. 나는 이러한 비금도의 아름다움을 알리기 위해 주변 섬들과 연계한 소금 박물관, 해양 역사문화 자료관, 특화된 미술관과 함께하는 문화 예술 클러스터를 만들고 싶다. 비금도 염전 전체를 세계 최대의 캔버스로 만들고, 염전의 소금 창고는 각각의 예술품으로 승화시킨 문화아트섬으로 만들어 세계적인 관광지로, 그리고 가장 살고 싶은 섬으로 만들고 싶다”라며 “주원염전은 비금도 주민 전체를 위한 염전이다. 아버지가 그렇게 하셨듯, 나 또한 평생 비금도를 위해 살 것이다. 주원염전의 비전이 곧 비금도의 꿈과 희망이 될 수 있도록 하겠다”라고 밝혔다.

Succeeding to his father’s love of salt, president Gwak Min-sun of Joowon Salt Farm is seeking to inform the world of his great heritance from his father. He is promoting the excellence of bay salt to the people by adding modern scientific knowledge to the salt of Bigeumdo, which has a god-given natural saltpan. Like this, all his thoughts and life starts with and returns to salt.

The value of bay salt produced by Joowon Salt Farm is an infinite magnitude. Especially the best-quality summer salt is produced with eco-friendly ceramic tile artisanship from the saltpan that obtained the international certification of ISO22000 and ISO14001. He said, “Even though he is not here, to be faithful to my father, there is still no other way but to protect the health of many people with good salt.”

To adhere to his father’s hope, President Gwak is making honest bay salt to settle it as treasure on the table while using the profit from the salt to support the children in Africa and South America through an international organization for starving children and sharing it with the alienated. He inherited not only the bay salt but sincere efforts to enrich the lives of the world people as well.

Vision of Joowon Salt Farm is the dream and hope of Bigeumdo.

Bay salt of Joowon Salt Farm is unique because it has introduced ‘eco-friendly ceramic tile method’ for the first time in the nation. This method takes five times more of investment and upkeep than ordinary flooring saltpan but produces less than two thirds. Still, maintaining this method is the longtime obstinacy of Joowon Salt Farm, which wants to produce best-quality bay salt with low salinity and rich mineral and inorganic matter.

President Gwak, who also published a thesis (A study on the characteristics of our country’s salt industry and development plan) at Korea Univ. graduate school of bio and environmental science, emphasized that he would be devoted to expanding the pool of bay salt and R&D following the will of his deceased father to supply ‘salt for a happy table.’

Joowon Salt Farm is also drawing attention by developing diverse products using bay salt. Especially, among dental beauty products, Salt Clinic Toothpaste can prevent the phenomenon of tooth shaking caused by periodontal wound, bleeding or inflammation because natural mineral contained in bay salt functions to maintain gum health and alveolar bone solidly. Besides, not using antiseptic, saccharin or surfactant, it has no foreign-body sensation left in the mouth though making less foam than ordinary toothpaste, so there is a rush of inquiries chiefly from customers of using it once. Another main product is Salt Body Wash based on bay salt. Saying, “Fine salt was impossible to use for wash product while for ordinary bay salt, we had to make it by grinding the particles finely because with its large and cornered particle, it can cause stimulus to the skin. And by adding sulfur content to this, we increased the skin immunity and stress relieving effect,” President Gwak Min-sun recollected that the process of developing body wash product was not easy. Body wash product developed this way was so filled with natural mineral content that it exercised the effect of maintaining moisturized and smooth skin for a long time. Besides, the company is serving to activate the salt industry by launching diverse slat therapy products including Hamcho and functional salt products, bath salt products and hand-made salt soap containing Seomcho (Bigeumdo spinach) and bay salt.

As a result, President Gwak won 2013 ‘the grand prix of the 25^th Korea Knowledge Businessman’ and was selected as 2013 Korea New Intellectual and designated as 2013 Korea Representative Local Product. Also, in September 2013, he opened Bay Salt Domestic Science Institute for the first time in the nation to direct energies on developing bay salt and promoting its excellence.

President Gwak said, “Though not being widely known yet, Bigeumdo is an island possessed of god-given nature hardly seen anywhere in the world. To promote such beauty of Bigeumdo, I want to make a culture and arts cluster of the salt museum, marine history culture center and specialized art museum in connection with surrounding islands. I want to make the entire salt farm of Bigeumdo the biggest canvas of the world, its salt storehouse a cultural art island, each of which being sublimated with artwork into a world-famous tourist resort, and a most wanted island to live on. Joowon Salt Farm exists for the whole inhabitants of Bigeumdo. As my father did, I will live for life for the sake of Bigeumdo. I will realize the vision of Joowon Salt Farm into the dream and hope of Bigeumdo.”

With the great inheritance from his father, President Gwak Min-sun is making toward a bigger dream. We cannot but look forward to the history of bay salt and Bigeumdo he is planning to make.
