세 번째 저서, “울지마, 내일이 있으니까”

정우철강은 인천 남동공단에 위치한 제철·제강기계 제작 및 철강임가공업체로 20년의 역사를 자랑하는 강소기업이다. 주로 대기업인 동부제철, 현대하이스코, 세아제강에 조업자재와 설비자재를 납품하고 있는 내실 있는 기업으로 익히 알려져 있다. 고환택 대표는 오늘도 정우철강을 세계 제일의 제품을 만드는 회사로 성장시키기 위해 달리고 있다. 그는 정우철강을 경영하면서 세 가지 덕목을 강조한 사훈을 내걸었다. 기본과 원칙에 충실한 회사, 기술 및 서비스 경쟁력이 있는 회사, 그리고 직원이 사장 성과급 주는 회사가 바로 그것이다. 그 중 ‘직원이 사장 성과급 주는 회사’라는 덕목은 기본적으로 신뢰와 협력을 바탕으로 노사 건전한 시너지 효과를 이루자는 고환택 대표의 기업이념을 반영한 것이다. 그는 건강한 노사문화야 말로 글로벌 기업의 기초가 되는 근본철학이라 말한다.

바쁘게 일정을 소화하고 있는 고 대표의 또 다른 이름은 바로 ‘스테디셀러 작가’다. 그는 올 해 <철든 놈이 성공한다>와 <성공은 바보다>를 잇는 희망에 메시지 <울지마, 내일이 있으니까>를 발표해 많은 사람들에게 위로와 희망의 메시지를 전했다. “한 기업의 경영자로서 IMF의 위기 속에서 큰 시련의 아픔을 감내해야 했습니다. 이 책은 제가 실패를 다시 희망이라는 단어로 바꾸어 가는 과정 속에서 경험한 것들에 대한 이야기죠. 사람들에게 좌절하지 말고 같이 희망을 쏘아 올리자 라는 내용을 담고 있습니다.” 고 대표는 성공적으로 재기를 하고 뒤를 돌아보았을 때 당시 어려웠던 상황조차도 너무 아름답게 보이는 것을 목도했다. 그런 이유 때문이었을까? 그는 자신의 저서를 통해 ‘아프고 힘들어도 감사함을 잊지 말자’, ‘남에게 원망을 하지 말고 모든 것을 내 탓으로 돌리자’, ‘인생이 주어지는 어려움이 곧 기회다’라고 설파하고 있다.

성공의 역사를 새로이 쓰려 했던 모진 10년의 세월. 회사가 어려울 때에도 고환택 대표는 배움의 끈을 놓지 않았다. 그것이 정우철강을 다시 일으켜 세우는 원동력이 되었을까. 그러한 배움을 향한 열정은 아직도 현재진행형이다. 고환택 대표는 대학 졸업 후 인하대학교 내에 3개 대학원을 다니면서 50세가 되던 해에 박사학위를 받았고, 54세에는 태권도 공인 4단을 취득하기도 했다. 현재 그는 인하대학교 경영학 박사로 주 1회 ‘기술경영 창업’이란 강의를 맡고 있다. “저는 강단에서 학생들에게 기술경영 즉, 과학기술과 경영원리를 결합하여 실무능력을 갖춘 전문 인력을 양성과 창업에 관한 강의를 하고 있습니다. 성공에도 숙성기간이 필요하죠. 분명히 성공에는 1000일의 비밀 혹은 10년의 교훈이 있습니다. 후학을 양성하며 묵묵히 자신의 꿈을 그려가는 학생들의 진솔한 멘토로 남고 싶습니다.”

또한 그는 중소기업청 Yes Leaders의 스타 강사로, 성공학 강사로도 활약 중이다. 그는 전국을 무대로 특강을 이어오며 사람들에게 ‘육체의 성장은 멈추어도 꿈의 성장을 멈추지 말라’고 조언한다. “창조경제의 핵심은 무에서 유를 창조하는 정신. 끊임없는 도전으로 목적을 이뤄내는 의지. 새로운 가치나 일자리를 창출하는 것입니다. 끊임없이 배우고 익히며, 끊임없이 도전하고 실패를 두려워하지 말아야 합니다. 불확실성을 뛰어 넘는 열정을 지닌 젊은이들이 있어야 정부가 바라는 창조경제에 꽃을 피울 수가 있는 것입니다.” 그는 오늘도 청년들의 잠재된 끼와 열정을 부채질하고 그들의 자신감과 도전의식을 풀무질하는 멘토로서 모범적인 행보를 이어가고 있다.

Go Hwan-taek, president of Jungwoo Steel & an adjunct professor at Inha University

Lately, the trend in the bookseller’s is books on self-development. Modern people who avoided books declaring the finale of liberal arts are turning their eyes back on printed letters on paper to read a book on self-development dwelling on such topic as the art of living or healing. In our time when the youth can’t find hope any more, what is it that they are trying to find in the book not in the reality? Let’s hear about the third hope from Go Hwan-taek, president of Jungwoo Steel Co., Ltd.

His third book “Do not cry because you have tomorrow.”

Jungwoo Steel is an iron/steel machinery manufacturer and steel processor located in Namdong Industrial Complex, Inchon, and a small but powerful enterprise boasting of 20 years’ history. This solid company is well known chiefly because it delivers operating and facility materials to such large enterprises as Dongbu Steel, Hyundai Hysco and Seah Steel. President Go Hwan-taek is devoted to building up Jungwoo Steel into the world’s top-class manufacturer. While running the company, he put up a motto stressing three virtues ? a company abiding by the basics and principles with competitiveness in technology and service, and where the staff gives performance-based pay to the president. Of them, the virtue of ‘company where ‘the staff gives performance-based pay to the president’ basically reflects the president Go’s corporate philosophy on making healthy synergy effect between labor and management based on mutual trust and cooperation. He says that a healthy labor-management culture is the foundation underpinning a global enterprise. In his usually busy schedule, President Go is also known as ‘a steady-seller writer.’ This year, he published his book , a message of comfort and hope to many people and a follow-up to his earlier books and . “I had to suffer pain of great trouble in the crisis from IMF as a company manager. This book is a story of what I have experienced in the process from my failure until recovery of hope. It contains my message to people ‘Don’t be frustrated. Let’s have hope together.’” President Go found that, when he looked back on his past years after making a successful comeback, even his earlier difficult circumstances looked so beautiful. Probably for that reason, he elucidates through his book that ‘Don’t forget about gratitude no matter how painful and tough it is.’ ‘Don’t’ blame others but ascribe everything to you,’ and ‘Hardship given in life is the very opportunity for you.’ President Go Hwan-taek describes his secret of success as ‘sincerity.’ “Being steady and sincere is the best weapon. Only when I put my heart and soul into the company can the company, the staff and me survive. I started from scratch for both the business and the family, but there was nothing impossible when I took elaborate pains.” President Go is transcribing his experience of thick density, not the theoretical art of living, onto paper letter by letter. He is becoming a live evidence of hope to modern people who are complaining about a vague anxiety for tomorrow.

Even for the toughest ten years with hardship of the company destined to rewrite the history of success, President Go Hwan-taek never let go of the band of learning. It may have been the prime mover of rebuilding Jungwoo Steel. That passion for learning is still in the present progressive. After graduation from college, President Go attended three graduate schools within Inha University and earned a doctor’s degree at his age of 50, while officially obtaining the 4th degree of Taegwondo at 54. Currently, as a doctor of business administration from Inha Univ., he is giving a class of ‘Startup for technological management’ once a week. “At university, I am giving students a lecture on technological management, that is, a combination of scientific technology and management principles for rearing professional manpower equipped with working ability aimed toward startups. Success also needs a time for maturation. Clearly, success requires a thousand days’ secret or ten years’ lesson. I want to remain a true mentor for rearing the students who are silently dreaming for their future.”

He is also working as a star lecturer on success for Yes Leaders of Small Business Administration. Continuing with his special lecture around the country, he advises, ‘Do not let your dream stop even for a moment.’ He says, “The core of creative economy is the spirit of creating something out of nothing, will to achieve the aim with constant challenge, and creation of a new value or jobs. With incessant learning and practice, we should keep challenging rather than fearing about failure. It is when there are youths ready to surpass uncertainty with passion that the government can blossom its wanted creative economy.” He is giving his best for youths as a mentor who want to incite their latent talent and passion and inspire them into self-confidence and challenge.

President Go, who lost his father at young age and then came up to Seoul, knows about the hunger for learning better than anyone else. That’s why he supplies ‘Go Hwan-taek scholarship’ worth ten million won each year to students who find it hard to continue with study. He says that a successful person should fulfill their social responsibility on their part. A capitalist society would recover its positive function if the haves lead a textbook life returning more to the society. “As a person who makes steel machinery, I want to raise any small part to a top-level quality in the world. Also, I want to be in place as a partner to help in the growth and development of a steel mill so that domestic iron industry may lead the world.” His remark was welcome to the future of our country when he says that he wants to help students in a difficult situation and further contribute to development of the community.

“As a mentor, I want to arouse the latent talent and passion out of the youth. I will make continued efforts to instill self-confidence and challenging spirit in them.”
