가업승계가 가장 활발한 나라는 단연 일본이다. 일본 정부는 최근 2016년부터 친족이 아닌 사람을 후계자로 해도 세금 혜택을 높이고 관련 기준은 완화하겠다고 발표했다. 일본 역시 가업을 3대에 물리면 자산이 제로가 된다는 회의적 반응이 팽배한 것도 사실이지만 가업승계가 갖는 세계적인 경쟁력과 무형의 가치를 국가적 차원에서 장려하고자 하는 것이다. 여기 3대째 우리나라에서 가업을 이어가며 시대의 요구에 발맞추어 발전시키고 있는 사람이 있어 화제다. 교육학 석사 출신의 디자이너 가인스토리/가인단한복(www.toriee.co.kr/www.gaindan.com)의 김가인 대표를 만나봤다.

가인단, 전통을 계승하고 발전시키기 위한 진화

<토리 바이 가인스토리>의 역사는 1973년 설립 된 백마공예로 거슬러 올라간다. 백마공예는 종이와 한복 패브릭을 소재로 한 반짇고리를 처음 선보였던 곳으로 시대의 변화 속에서도 한국의 전통제품을 만들겠다는 집념을 지켜온 회사였다. 그렇게 1대 2대에 걸쳐 고집스럽게 한국의 멋을 지켜오던 백마공예는 3대에 와서 새로운 변화의 시대의 화려한 막을 연다. 바로 교육학을 전공한 김가인 대표가 우리나라의 정신을 아이들에게 알려주기 위해 제품개발에 몰두하는 것. 한복원단의 반짇고리는 해외 유명 디자이너 패브릭으로 만든 아이들의 보관함으로, 한복의 화려한 색감의 장식품들은 아이들의 노리갯감으로 변신했다. 특히 <가인단>의 리버티 파티복은 국내뿐 아니라 해외시장에서도 반응이 뜨거웠다. “해외원단을 사용한 것은 우리 한복의 섬세한 기술력과 기품 넘치는 아름다운을 더 많은 나라의 더 많은 사람들에게 알리기 위한 선택이었습니다. 한복이 아니라 파티복이라 이름 붙인 이유도 그 같은 이유에서죠. 하지만 가인만의 40년 노하우와 정신은 결코 변하지 않았다고 자부합니다.” 김가인 대표는 현재 실을 둥글게 감은 뭉치라는 우리말을 사용한 <토리>를 주축으로 아이들을 위한 제품을 디자인하는 <가인스토리>와 아이들의 한복을 제작하는 <가인단>이라는 실을 연결해 나가고 있다.

가인스토리, 아이들의 감성을 키워주는 소품

<가인스토리>는 아이를 생각하는 엄마의 그 마음으로 오직 한 아이만을 위한 소품을 주문·생산하는 곳이다. 제품에도 영혼이 있다고 말하는 김가인 대표의 믿음처럼 <가인스토리>에는 그녀의 엄마로서의 진정성과, 교육학 전공자로서의 고심이 고스란히 담겨져 있다. 가업을 이어받는 것을 반대한 부모님은 그녀가 교육자가 되길 바랐지만 그녀는 자신만의 방식으로 가업을 이어받고 또 전공도 살리고 있는 샘이다. “예쁜 방에서 공주님 왕자님이 되고 싶은 아이들의 환상을 실현시켜주고 싶어요. 그 속에서 자연스럽게 아이들이 우리나라 문화에 자부심을 느낄 수 있도록 언제나 노력해 나갈 겁니다.” <가인스토리>는 수작업으로 고퀄리티를 유지하고 있지만 언제나 제품대비 합리적인 가격으로 고객들과 만나고 있다. 경제사정과 상관없이 내 아이에게 좋은 것을 해주고 싶은 부모의 마음을 누구보다 잘 알고 있는 그녀이기 때문이다. 그런 진심이 통했을까? 가격 거품을 빼기 위해 따로 광고를 하지 않았음에도 <가인스토리>는 엄마들 사이에서 먼저 입소문이 나면서 대박을 터트렸다. “누구의 성공도 혼자만의 것은 아니라 배워갑니다. 오늘 날의 <토리 바이 가인스토리>를 함께 일궈내 주신 온·오프라인의 수많은 지인들에게 감사의 인사를 전하고 싶습니다.”

김가인 대표는 최근 헬로키티와의 콜라보레이션을 성공적으로 마쳤고, 비슷한 형태의 작업을 연이어 준비하고 있다. 내년에는 <토리>의 공장을 설립하여 늘어나는 국·내외 시장의 주문들을 소화해 나갈 예정이며, 사업의 방향을 더 다각화하여 <토리>의 또 다른 색실들을 이어 나갈 방침이다. 특유의 유쾌함과 무한 긍정 에너지로 다른 사람들마저도 아름답게 물들이는 김가인 대표. 다가오는 새해에는 그녀와 함께 우리나라의 멋이 더욱 더 세계로 뻗어나가기를 기원한다.

Gaindan, it is an evolution for keeping and developing the tradition better

is created from the in 1973. produced sewing boxes made of Hanbok materials and papers for the first time and they had a belief to make Korean traditional item in the wild time back then. With their guts, they didn’t stop doing that and even improved the beauty of Korean traditional items. And now, they have a new era of change in the 3^rd generation, which looks fabulous.

It is simply CEO Kim, Ga-In that is concentrating on making things for the children so that she can let them know about the Korean spirit. Eventually, sewing boxes have changed into girls’ personal boxes that are made of internationally famous designers’ fabrics and colorful accessories of Hanbok became kids’ toys.

Especially, Liberty Party outfit made by was hot not only in Korea, also overseas countries. “Using other countries’ raw textile was a choice to let them know about our delicate technique and the beauty of Hanbok more than before. This is the same reason why we named it as a party outfit, not Hanbok. However, I can tell our 40-year-knowhow and the spirit of Gaindan has never changed.” CEO Kim, Ga-In is doing the main business, , which means a ball of thread in Korean language and , and for kids’ Hanbok.

GainStory, items for growing the children’s emotions

At , mothers who always think of their kids can order something only for their kids. As for CEO Kim believes that every item has a soul, so she puts honesty in all the products as a mother and an educator. However, her parents didn’t want her to take the company over, because they want her to be an educator. On the other hand, she is continuing her family business and also using her knowledge from her study in a way.

“I would like children who want to be a princess or a prince in a pretty room to make that happen to them. I will push myself to make the children feel the pride of Korean tradition and culture from it.”

Besides, ’s items are made by hands so they are very elaborate and high quality but the prices are very reasonable. Maybe, that must appeale to people!

To reduce the money for the promotion to make the price higher, they skipped it, but people knew the brand and finally hit the popularity. “I am still learning about this happening is not just for me. I would like to say thank everyone who work on and support us in the on and off lines.”

CEO Kim, Ga-In finished the collaboration with successfully and she is preparing for similar things like that, recently.
