주거지, 묘지를 정하는 고전적인 매뉴얼인 풍수지리학은 땅의 성격을 파악하여 사람이 살아가기 좋은 터전을 잡는다는 것을 의미한다. 현대에 와서는 풍수지리학이 단순 미신이나 전설이 아닌 자연과 어우러진 웰빙문화, 심리학, 기상과학과의 융합지식으로 각광받을 가능성이 높아졌다. 이 현대적 풍수지리학을 생활학문으로 승화시키는 동방문화대학원대학교 풍수지리학과 추영애 교수와 풍수지리 현대화에 대한 이상적인 접근법과 개념을 정리해 보았다.

생활의 지혜와 과학, 음양오행의 이치가 만난 풍수학의 장점
많은 이들이 풍수지리학을 동양 고유의 전유물이라 생각하지만, 현생인류의 조상이자 최초의 장례 풍습을 가진 네안데르탈인은 3가지 기준으로 거주지를 골랐다고 한다. 동굴에 높은 둔덕으로 바람을 막았으며, 입구는 주변 경관이 잘 보이는 곳이어야 하고, 물을 쉽게 구할 수 있는 장소인데, 이것이 풍수의 3요소인 산(山), 수(水), 방위(方位)를 상징하는 삶의 지혜로 전승된 셈이다. 동방문화대학원대학교 풍수지리학과 추영애 교수는 풍수지리학을 “땅의 성격을 파악해 좋은 터전을 잡고, 산수의 형세와 방위 같은 환경요인을 인간의 길흉화복과 관련지어 생활 터전과 묘지를 잡는 자연·세계관”이라고 정의한다. 가장 오래 된 풍수서인 한(漢)나라 때의 청오경에서는 ‘음과 양이 부합하여 천지가 통해 내기가 싹트고 외기가 형상을 이룬다’ 하였으며, 금낭경에서는 ‘기를 흩뜨리는 바람을 막고, 흐르는 기가 물을 만나 멈추어 고이는 원리’를 서술하고 있다. 그래서 풍수의 기본은 인간 생활에 큰 영향을 미치는 바람과 물의 요소를 살피는 것이며, 또한 하늘과 땅 사이의 생명인 사람이 자연의 일부로 조화롭게 살아가는 이치를 실천하는 것이다.

현대 건축에서는 물을 배산임수의 규칙 없이 고층 건물을 세우고 있음에도 불구하고, 여전히 인간의 생존을 위한 기후, 일조량에 민감하다. 또한 북향을 기피하고 남향을 선호하며 태풍과 수해에 버티는 건물을 짓는 것 등은 풍수의 이치에 일맥상통하고 있는 것이다. 서양심리학에서는 문을 열면 바로 거울이 보이는 인테리어가 우울증을 악화시킬 수도 있다고 하는데, 이는 동양의 풍수지리학자들이 ‘양택삼요(좋은 집을 결정하는 현관문, 안방, 부엌 3요소)에 따라 외부 기운이 드나드는 대문의 맞은편에 좋은 기운을 나가게 할 거울을 두지 말라고 주장하는 것과도 일치한다. 이러한 사례만 보더라도 풍수지리는 인간의 생활과 가장 밀접한 관계이며, 시공을 초월해 인류의 삶에 보편적으로 적용가능하다는 증거가 된다.

삶의 명당을 찾을 수도, 바꿀 수도, 만들 수도 있는 현대 풍수지리, 양택풍수
오래 전 남이 차지한 명당을 보며 아쉬워하는 것이 고전 풍수지리라면, 추 교수의 현대화 된 ‘생활풍수’는 실사구시에 입각해 자유롭게 응용하는 실용풍수이다. 추 교수는 좋은 음덕을 받을 묘 자리를 정하는 음택풍수와 좋은 땅을 집터로 정해 그 기운을 받는 양택풍수 중 후자를 현대인을 위한 실용풍수로 추천한다. “생활풍수는 양택학, 가상학, 그리고 실내풍수인테리어로 세분할 수 있다. 생활풍수에 맞게 땅을 산다면, 우선 땅의 위치나 형태가 합당한지 판단하고, 집을 짓는다면 좌향을 어디로 할지 정하고 집의 형태와 구조, 방의 배치를 정한다. 마지막으로 정해진 공간에 가구배치와 인테리어를 하는 것에 생활풍수를 응용하게 되는 것이다. 그리고 집터를 정하는 양택학은 땅의 기운에 관련된 것이며, 가상학은 하늘의 기운(천기)에 관련된 학문이다. 가상학에 따르면 도시에서 집의 형태와 배치를 바꾸거나 잘 골라 천기를 누릴 수 있다.

집의 가상을 바꾸는 개조를 하거나 이사를 가면 집안의 운을 바꿀 수 있는 셈이다” 이렇듯 양택풍수는 사람의 삶에 가장 직접적인 영향을 끼치며 좋은 방향으로 바꿀 수 있는 풍수개념이다. 그래서 추 교수는 양택가상학에 대해 천운을 바꿀 수도 있는 적극적 운세론인 개운학(開運學)이라고 부른다. 또한 추 교수는 잠자리에 대한 풍수가 중요하다고 한다. 삶의 1/3을 차지하며 수면 중에는 이동이 없어 일정한 기운을 그대로 받게 되기 때문이다. 그래서 숙면을 위한 인테리어와 재배치를 거쳐 다소 삭막한 도시의 주거 공간에서도 건강을 지키면서 자신의 운을 충분히 긍정적으로 바꿀 수 있다고 한다. 풍수를 활용해 건강과 장수를 보장하는 장소를 만들 수 있다면, 그 곳이 바로 자신을 위한 명당이기 때문이다.

쉽고 재미있는 강의로 현대인들을 위한 생활풍수학을 보급할 것
꾸준한 웰빙 열풍, 킨포크적 인테리어의 심플함과 세련됨이 각광받으면서, 평소 생활하는 공간에서 좋은 기운을 받아들이고자 하는 현대적 생활풍수에 대한 관심 또한 높아지고 있다. 그래서 추 교수는 풍수의 골격이 되는 기본 이론을 정확히 전달하고, 풍수의 저변 확대를 위해 막연한 이론이 아닌 쉽고 재미있는 강의를 통해 후학을 양성하고 있다. 또한 일상에 적용할 생활풍수를 가장 강조하여, 작지만 실천할 수 있는 풍수적 접근 위주로 가르친다. 이러한 성과로 2012년 <우리것보존협회>가 선정한 철학 부문 명인에 선정되기도 한 추 교수는 현대인들이 풍수를 활용할 수 있도록 생활풍수에 대한 외부 강의도 준비 중이라고 한다. 추 교수는 배산임수를 낯설게 받아들이는 젊은 세대들에게 ‘지금은 땔감을 얻는 옛날의 산 대신 높은 빌딩이 산이요, 생활용수와 이동수단이 되는 강 대신 도로가 그 자리를 차지했다’는 설명으로 풍수의 개념을 보다 쉽게 전달하고 있다. “같은 동양권인 일본, 홍콩, 대만은 생활풍수를 활용해 문화와 삶의 질을 높이고 있다. 누구나 쉽게 우주와 자연의 이치를 학문으로 접근할 수 있는 계기를 만들어 주고, 과학적인 이론과 고전의 논리적 지혜가 접목된 생활풍수학을 주택 뿐 아니라 도시와 문화 공간 건립에도 활용할 수 있게 되길 바란다”는 추 교수는 전세, 월세, 1인가구가 증가하는 상황에 맞추어 소규모, 개인 공간을 풍수의 관점에서 해석하는 작업에도 열정을 보이고 있다. 지금은 이사대행센터들도 손(損) 없는 길일에 이사하는 고객들의 요구를 서비스 차원에서 받아들이고 있지만, 추 교수의 바람은 더 많은 사람들이 근본적으로 풍수를 통해 행복해지는 것이다. 추 교수의 온고지신적인 학문적 성과가 널리 대중화 되어, 조만간 자신의 출생년도(본명궁)과 풍수 요건을 맞추는 것이 혈액형 점보다 더 과학적이면서 친근한 생활 상식으로 자리 잡게 되기를 진심으로 바란다.

Feng shui is built on the principle of Yin and Yang
Many people regard Feng shui as an exclusive property of the Orient but the progenitor of the human race Neanderthal men is known to choose their abode based on three criteria: A cave with 1) high mound to block wind, 2) visibility, 3) easy access to water. These are exactly the three basic elements of Feng shui: mountain, water and four cardinal points. Feng Shui Prof. Choo Young-ae at Dongbang Culture University explains "The land (location) indicates a good earth, and visibility and directions the dweller's fortune." It is written in Chungohgyeong (the oldest Feng shui book in the Han Kingdom, China) that "Yin (earth) meets Yang (sky) to push up inner energy and outer shape from the earth" and another ancient book Geumnanggyeong states the principle that it (good location) blocks the wind that disperses good energy, meets water and gather the good energy in one place. So the basics of Feng shui is to see the elements of wind and water while practicing the oder of nature in which we are living as a part. To the eyes of Feng shui specialists, modern buildings built high here and there thoughtlessly is a nonsense as they still care about health, climate and amount of sunshine. Feng shui tells us that an abode should face the south and endure harsh weather. Western psychology says not to put a mirror on the wall where you can see it straight when opening the door. This is well matched with a Feng shui theory not to put mirror on any walls in front of door as energy comes and goes through the door; the mirror hits back the energy outside. This tells us in broad terms that Feng shui is closely connected to our daily lives.

Yangtack Feng shui, a modern Feng shui that can find you a right abode
If the olden Feng shui makes people envy other's abode, Prof. Choo's modern 'Daily Feng shui' is a practical one. Choo recommends Yangtaek Feng shui, which uses energy from the earth the building is standing, rather than Eumtaek Feng shui, which decides resting place where offsprings can receive ancestors' good energy. Choo says "Daily Feng shui can be divided into Yangtaek Studies, Site Studies and Interior Feng shui. It tells you to consider the location, the direction, the shape and layout and the arrangement of the furniture. Yangtaek Studies is about the earth and Site Studies energy in the sky. The latter in particular tells us that changing the shape of layout of your house alone can bring you good energy from the sky." For this reason, Prof. Choo calls Yangtack Site Studies for Gyewoonhak (fortune open its door). Choo also emphasizes on bedding because we receive energy without distraction as we are not moving while asleep. We feel refreshed in the morning after a good and sound sleep last night. It applies the same to Feng shui but only explained in terms of energy we receive. So, a sound sleep in a good place is regarded as an excellent spot in Feng shui.

Spreading modern Feng shui with easy and interesting classes
As people's interest in wellbeing and sophisticated space rises, their interest in healthy living environment is also increasing. To take the moment, Prof. Choo is passionately spreading her modern Feng shui studies through her easy and interesting classes. But she not only focuses on theory itself but how to apply it in our daily lives. For her contribution to the field, Choo was chosen as Master of Oriental Studies from the Korean Cultural Asset Preservation Association in 2012. She says "Today's buildings can compare with mountains in the past and traffic lanes rivers in modern term Feng shui. For this reason, people in Japan, Hongkong and Taiwan apply this modern Feng shui in their daily lives. I want more people and organizations to understand and practice the order of nature and universe and I will do my best to deliver the knowledge in the easiest way possible." Meanwhile, Choo is working on applying Feng shui in smaller spaces as the number of people using studio flats keep rising. She wishes Feng shui would be explained in more scientific way in the near future. Power Korea wishes Choo a prosperous 2016 with full of energy.
