Being born depends on the heaven but living

and dying depends on man¡¯s sincerity

- Na Geum-bae (pen name Big Tree), president of Gwangmyung Fortuneteller

Despite change of the times, teachings from the ancient sages are an eternal classic. From the old until now, move must be on a day without an evil spirit while wedding is set for an auspicious day after comparing the horoscopes of a young couple in Korea. What the modern fortuneteller does covers diverse topics from prediction about ups and downs of a nation to advice to a person¡¯s future and happiness as the strategist, prophet and geomantic specialist did. Now, a fortuneteller has been able to find its role for running an honest and systematic business and activity of social contribution as well. We interviewed President Na Geum-bae of Gwangmyung Fortuneteller, a bright image for Korea¡¯s future of fortunetelling, to hear the secret of his success.

Gwangmyung Fortuneteller specializing in high-famed divination counseling, equipped with theory and practice

Maters in many fields tend to be different from early childhood. It is said that President Na Geum-bae was able to read the fortune of adults since he was a boy. Then at 23, he suffered from waist ailment, for which even hospitals couldn¡¯t find the cause, and started a thousand-day prayer retiring to Mt. Taebaek for 3 years. Noticing his potential, his teacher Mr. Cheongi cured his illness and led him to the world of the science of divination. With his natural gift, he was devoted to study learning from seven teachers until at 23, when he had already mastered such classics as Yeonhoijapyung, Sajujungseol, Myungribogam and Sajucheopgyung to be an excellent physician in the science of divination. It is not easy to make the right guess at one¡¯s past but President Na¡¯s divination had reached the stage of seeing though dozens of years later and what would happen in the child¡¯ generation, too. It is thirty years since he has become a professional psychic denying living in seclusion but actively wanting to benefit people widely by combining with the modern knowledge. He is currently leading the most famous fortuneteller in the whole country. After operating Saju caf? in Chuncheon, Taebaek and Wonju, Ganwon-do, he moved to Gwangmyung, Gyeonggi-do to start a fortuneteller and is now running Gwangmyung Fortuneteller at the front of Nonhyum subway station, Gangnam-gu.

Saying ¡°Science of divination is like medicine that gives prescriptions by properly appraising a person¡¯s fortune,¡± President Na is repeating studies for more accurate and reliable results. He graduated from Sangji Univ., Gangwon Univ. and Gangwon Buddhist Univ. possessing the honorary doctor of Asian Shamanism from Mongol and doctor of philosophy from Philippines National Earist Univ. Gwangmyung Fortuneteller is boasting of the first-ranking credibility in predicting the fortune of the ex-president¡¯s last years and the next president¡¯s prospect. It is because, being faithful to his duty as a scholar on name and fortune to light up the uncertain future like a beacon, he doesn¡¯t spare positive advice on winning both escaping from misfortune.

A scholar on name and fortune, deeply credited by social leaders and politicians

Though in his study of fortunetelling he has been ready to advise those who visited him since 1983, what President Na wanted to be is an accurate fortuneteller without need to care about money. It was because he would be able to calmly give energy in telling another¡¯s good or bad luck only when he had no worries about livelihood himself. Besides, despite the busy schedule, he didn¡¯t neglect study by completing the course of theory on geomancy from Mr. Seong Jae-soo, etc. Starting with the study of amulet at this time, too, he is making diverse ones from ordinary amulet to be carried about in person to a frame to expel misfortune and folding-screen one. He shows such generosity by providing a bundle of 72 amulets or 108 lifelong amulets made in his own knowhow all at once. These can be called a cure-all set of amulet preventing trouble, official misfortune, a doom to come off a loser, legal argument, wrong human relations and business failure. Due to the word-of-mouth from people who actually escaped from misfortunes and received good luck several times more using such amulets, President Na served as an advisor to election for ex-and-present presidents as well as a psychotic for the current well-known leading classes of society. Despite such fame, President Na says prayers endlessly with heart and soul for the lifelong happiness of those who received amulets from him. His exact predictions about presidential candidate Ahn Cheol-soo¡¯s withdrawal, election of a woman president, etc. became the talk of the town, which were reported in the Seoul News dated February 7, 2013.

President Na¡¯s assiduous efforts for expert energy with prayers for 13 days and 12 nights after returning from Mongol even in his high level of competence was answered by the 2008 and 2010 International Divination Conferences held in Seoul and Beijing, respectively, with excellent thesis award and by 2009 Macau conference with the very best thesis award.

Opens the future management of fortunetellers rearing the students with the principle of social service and sincerity

Connecting every customer for long by the band of credibility, President Na is proposing an alternative for the future of the industry. For him, another ambition is to teach the students. He said he wanted to unsparingly pass his 30-year knowhow¡¯s he earned from seven teachers bearing physical pain, including science of names, Book of Changes, theory of Geomancy, personology, fame and wealth, and Saju.

His initiative invited those who had been working as a fortuneteller to his class producing 37 disciples, while President Na educated novices in person, leading a total of 120 fortunetellers to run a business around the country. Though keeping too busy to find time for rest, President Na is donating his talent to senior citizens associations, attending on the handicapped and helping those who had to start life anew after being released from prison.

His attitude about divination and fortunetelling is solid as proved in his usual belief that he must not dig into just one field but, especially in naming a person, imbue the energy of sincerity as a fortuneteller in consideration of Saju, profit and loss, yin and yang and even physiognomy. He is also working hard based on the humanitarian ideal to fulfill the post of the Central Headquarters as senior vice president for Korea Fortuneteller Association possessed of 300,000 members, Korean Society of Divination, Korea Geomancy Association and Korea Naming Association.

Like this, the high popularity of Gwangmyung Fortuneteller is most probably because President Na¡¯s professional teaching and service combined with professed lifelong sincerity in whole-hearted counseling has touched the heaven.
